Angel Dreaming
Synopsis:
ANGEL - young, pregnant and abandoned - returns with her friend JOHN to the derelict semi-rural family home that's been in her family for generations. She's a woman with a mission, determined to do it up for sale, and at the same time hoping to rid herself of unpleasant memories that have happened there, including the deaths of her grandmother (TESS), mother (CLARE) and father (AL). But the garden is a place of enchantment as well as dereliction, and its dead occupants wake to reveal the grief as well as the abuse of their dysfunctional lives. Shifting in real time between two parallel worlds - the magical real of the ghosts and the living world of Angel and John - comes this intriguing black comedy of love, betrayal and abandonment, with intertextual references to Thomas Hardy's classic novel Tess of the D'Urbevilles As Angel and John work to clear and create a new garden, old attitudes and family grudges die hard. The ghosts are free from the bonds that have tied them to their final resting places only to carry on the squabbling and enmity that marked them in life. The one consideration each seems to carry in their hearts is an obsessive love for Angel. But do they have her best interests at heart, or is it really that they want to keep her with them in the garden forever? Will the 'prison' that the garden seems to have become for Tess, Clare and Al also become a prison for a deeply troubled Angel?

Quiet Country, The
Synopsis:
A woman on the cusp of middle age lies trapped in her car in a dusty weed-ridden paddock. As crows call to each other and her ghostly ancestors rise and fall out of earth, 39-year-old MARY LAST struggles for life after the crash, in and out of consciousness, in and out of pain and loss, in and out of memory and dream. She is in a surreal wasteland where rusty farm implements, obsolete weaponry and degraded machinery indicate a lost heritage rapidly disappearing into salt and earth. How different from those times when men and women proudly ripped down trees and cleared ground to build their towns and houses in the bush. Mary seems to wake. She calls for help, only to be joined one after the other by the family ghosts, trapped in their own dramas and haunted obsessions. First is Mary's great-grandmother and pioneer woman: MARGARET LAST, desperately seeking husband Henry. Next is Mary's childhood hero, UNCLE WILLY, Vietnam War veteran, damaged, angry and vulnerable. Finally, steam engine driver great uncle STAN and his wife ISABEL whirl around her to Big Band swing, their smiling faces in the local town hall belying the emotional gap between them and Isabel's unanswered need to have a baby. Mary retreats into a comforting and childish world of imagination and memory, as these ancestral spirits come and go from the zone of her trapped body, whirling dust and the past around her head, but unable to free her from the car metal. Even 'heroic' Uncle Willy is more intent on getting his obsolete gun to work than helping his 'little' niece. In poetic rhyme and non-naturalistic language, moments from Mary and her ancestors' lives are captured in a surreal refrain that has a revolving door quality yet cannot disguise the need for Mary to escape the metal to live.
