Playwright and novelist Donald Jack was born in Manchester england in 1924, and served in the RaF during World War II. after the war he was involved in the Theatre in Great Britain before emigrating to Canada in 1951, where he studied at the Canadian Theatre School. Best know for his award-winning "BAndy Papers" series of novels, Jack also wrote numerous scripts for stage, radio, and television (his play Breakthrough was the first Canadian TV play broadcast simultaneously to the United States). the Canvas Barricade (first prize winner in the Stratford Shakespearean play writing competition of 1960) was the first original Canadian play to be performed on the main stage at the Stratford Festival (in 1961), directed by George McCowan. exit Muttering was staged in Toronto the following year (and published 1974 by Simon & Pierre Publishing Co. Ltd.). Crash was produced for the Ontario Playwrights' Showcase. Minuet for Brass Band, a three act play presented at Canadian Theatre School in Toronto in 1954, was directed by Sterndale Bennett. Donald Jack died in england in 2003. His papers are housed at the University of Calgary Library, Special Collections

Canvas Barricade, The
Misty Woodenbridge, a painter, has rejected the materialism of modern society for life in a tent by the Ottawa River, where he lives as carefree as the fabled grasshopper, eating stolen apples and painting masterpieces. But as summer draws to an end, reality rears its ugly head, and Misty must choose between starving in his tent and moving to the city with his fiancee. Meanwhile, his in-laws-to-be smell a cash cow when a mysterious art buyer begins snapping up Misty's work - and naturally they keep the money. Out of kind consideration for Misty's artistic ideals, of course. . .
Notes:
the Canvas Barricade won A play-writing competition held jointly by the Globe And Mail And the Stratford Festival, And had A six-performance run At the Stratford Festival in 1961. It was the first original Canadian play produced At Stratford. the cast for the Stratford production included Peter Donat (in the lead role of Misty Woodenbridge), Kate Reid, Zoe Caldwell, eric Christmas And Bruno Gerussi.
