Old Soul

Synopsis:
explores the history of gay life in New York during the 1920s through the eyes of a Columbia college student and his subsequent career in city government. His name is Matthew Pennington, an average fellow who escapes the confines of his small town and happens to fall in love with his school mate, John Carlton. although the 1920s in New York represented an incredibly available gay community, the pair experience the pitfalls of living a gay life before liberation. In counterpoint to Matthew's story is Jim, a gay Columbia student living in the present. The play bounces back and forth between the past and present as Matthew and Jim go to college, come out in their own contemporary ways, discover first love and the similar pains and joys that go along with it. Mysteriously, Matthew and Jim meet on a park bench. Here the two eras of gay life collide and we find out the truth: that Jim is really Matthew reincarnated. Matthew encourages Jim to get out of his rut and focus on fulfilling his dreams. Jim takes the meeting to heart and dives into life full force, helping Matthew's soul to complete his purpose.
