In Los Angeles, under the auspices of Los Angeles Contemporary exhibitions, Jahnke created the Beasts of Luxury, 1996 - a traveling carnival presenting the startling parallels in the strange and disturbing case histories of Gilles de Rais and Countess erzsebet Bathory; Syphilis, 1994 - Imagining a marriage between Lautreamont, author of the 1868 pre-surrealist nightmare of Maldoror, and the tragic hermaphrodite Herculine Barbin; the Monster of Dusseldorf or Paint Me, Paint Me Peter Kurten, 1993 - Involving an unbalanced ballerina's obsession with a painter she believes to be the historical maniac of the title; and the Deranged Cousins, 1990 - Concerning the demise of three hedonist cousins sequestered in the swamps of the south. as well as his original works, Jahnke has also mounted productions of Jean anouilh's antigone, in which antigone vented her frustrations through Chopin on the piano, and Oscar Wilde's unfinished La Sainte Courtesane, in which the holy whore of the title roamed the valleys of thebaid with a rock n' roll band. Jahnke was also a member of Reza abdoh's Dar a Luz company, appearing in Quotations From a Ruined City in Los Angeles, New York, and much of Europe, as well as his production of Verdi's Simon BoccAnnegra at the Long Beach City OperA. Archery Contest, The

Synopsis:
the archery Contest is an abstract sex comedy that follows the adventures of a quintet of players trapped between the Christian rules of the past and the nihilistic chaos of the future. a Reverend and his wife pursue a young girl and boy in a contest to claim them as secondary spouses. encouraged by the teenagers' guardian-a cemetery sexton-the chase reaches its zenith during the ritualistic celebration of a long forgotten holiday. Designed as a three-part radio play in order to make the piece more accessible, the archery Contest challenges the notion that theatre exists only in the realm of the visual stage. a studio recording of Part 1 will be online throughout this month at aRT Radio WPS1.org, while Part 2 will be recorded live in a staged performance at P.S. 122 before going online. Finally, Part 3 will appear in 2008. Note: each part is a self-contained performance-event that can be enjoyed individually

Men Go Down

Synopsis:
Men Go Down is inspired by the dearth of American leaders willing to step forward and claim responsibility for our present economic and militaristic downturn, and considers the unequivocal and detrimental impact that the machinations of war and finances have on our present day psyche. the play follows a Greek king who abandons his war-torn country for the safety of a cliff-side cave. the narrative stretches one thousand years through the extended lifespan of the tormented ruler, a man who simply will not make a decision about how to handle his human responsibilities, and until he does so, cannot die. This punishment, or gift, is the verdict of an unnamed political council, who observes but remains distanced during his years of ethical elusion. Written in a modern and fragmented form of blank verse, Men Go Down is an attempt to create a uniquely poetic and contemporary language and then apply it to historical subject matter. Over the course of the work's one thousand year time span, the language itself breaks down as the play's internal time passes and more and more of the language is removed from the text, leaving large gaps of unfinished thoughts. these unheard thoughts reflect our contemporary ability to erase and eradicate what we feel no longer serves us, leaving us often without answers to our own pressing questions.
