        Paved With Gold

Paved With Gold

Synopsis:
the courage, humour and pride of the street people of the Victorian slums blazes theough as they reveal their fortunes and misfortunes to the "Gentleman" (Henry Mayhew). This unseen and unheard interviewer draws from them the facts of their way of life, sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic and always in their own genuine language. the action flows continuously as the people pass through the yard singly, in pairs or in groups. their rich and contrasting characters present a fascinating and authentic picture of the 1860's; in Mayhew's own words: "a cyclopaedia of the industry, the want and the vice of thegreat metropolis."

Notes:
