Shanty, The
Synopsis:
We must participate in our democracy or a small clique will consolidate power and be our dictators. The play revolves around a hard working skilled carpenter (West Indian) who refuses to participate in the politics of the union or the contractors and attempts to succeed because of his skill. It involves eight other carpenters of multi racial and diverse backgrounds, locked in a Shanty in the job shut down by the local union, and caught in this struggle between the union and the contractor. It deals with the corruption and brutality among construction workers, good men forced to take paths they might have avoided otherwise --- in order to survive in Harlem, New York City
Notes:
The Play was optioned for Broadway And was Awarded National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship for Literature in 1980. Unfortunately, family priorities required that the playwright pull the plug on the option. He only started writing 32 years later - in 2010.
