Margaret Kirby grew up in Geelong in an Anglican vicarage. She had her first play, Bachelor Rock, developed and showcased at Belvoir Street Theatre by Playworks when she was a student at the Victorian College of the Arts School of Drama. The play was subsequently produced as part of the 1991 VCA Graduating Writers' Season. The first production of My Body. My Blood was at the Chapter House of St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne. It was nominated for an AWGIE for Best Stage Play and a Human Rights Award for Drama. She was nominated for best new original talent in the 1994 Age Performing Arts Awards. She is also an acrobat and has performed and taught with Circus Oz.
