Valentin Krasnogorov is a veteran Russian playwright. He has displayed a superb mastery of many kinds of plays. Biting satire, a keen sense of humor both grotesque and absurd, lyricism, and a knowledge of the human heart - these are the main features of Krasnogorov's theatre pieces. His plays Let's Have Sex, The Dog, Small Tragedies, This Weak Tender Sex, Procession of Gnomes, Love Medicine, Several Hours from the Life of a Man and a Woman, Delights of Adultery, The Dog, Small Tragedies, This Weak Tender Sex, Bride's Room, The Cruel Lesson, Murder Case et al. are warmly met by critics and audience. Up to now 21 plays of him have been performed in 160 theaters. The plays of V. Krasnogorov are sometimes played several hundreds times. Critics noticed that "Krasnogorov's plays cross borders easily". For this reason, many of them have been translated into foreign languages and staged in theatres, on radio and on TV of different countries. He is member of the Writers Union of Russia, the Russian Union of Theater Workers, and has served as president of the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Playwrights Association.

Synopsis:

There are 3 characters in this drama: a man, a woman and . . . a dog (who is to be played by a child or by an actress). The action turns on a simple premise: the man wants to have his dog killed and leads it to a veterinary station, where the woman works. The dog hinders his lifestyle - but can love and faithfulness hinder anybody? Character of the woman - biting, and sometimes aggressive, but unselfish, ready to love and to help - determined the play's title. This touching play is presented by many theatres with great success.

Synopsis:

Five people search for love, self-affirmation, and happiness, all of which prove illusive in this strange, humorous play. A wife tries to talk to her husband about sex, but he would rather read a book. Soon a psychiatry professor appears and convinces the wife to run away with him, but while she is packing her bags, a young woman comes along and invites the professor to run away with her. The characters' tragic pleas of 'Let's have sex!' fail to bring about any human intercourse, but as a discourse, the phrase provides an empty slogan with which to communicate their isolated and alienated existence in a hostile postmodern world.

Original Playwright - Valentin Krasnogorov. Translation by Valentin Krasnogorov

Synopsis:

A triptych of short plays of a keen philosophical content. They are written in a very modern style with a great imaginative force. The idea of the plays is how difficult it is for men to hear and understand each other. An unusual theatrical form arouses great audience interest. The story. 1. Pelicans In A Desert. Four quite independent lines of action are simultaneously developed in this short play: a girl meeting her lover, a lonely man who requests a doctor's visit to have a human being to talk with, a blind man who is abandoned by his companion, and an old woman waiting in vain for help. All the lines form a whole, which is full of passion and meaning. 2. What Are You Thinking Of? A man and his wife are talking during their dinner, but their words don't matter. While talking the man dreams of freedom, love, fame, happiness, and his dreams materialize on the scene. 3. The Wall. A man and his wife discover one morning that an invisible wall has risen between them. In spite of all their attempts they cannot get over it. This short play - a dialog between the two, who can't even hear each other.

Apart from very popular and world touring productions, many performing arts events are largely forgotten about in a matter of months. Traces may remain in various collections, but few collecting agencies, such as libraries, catalogue each flyer or program individually. Hence, unless one knows that an event took place at a certain time in a certain place, tracking down such an event as part of a research project is often a matter of chance. Where research needs to be carried out on high profile and well-documented productions only, this is not a problem. However, both the historian and the analyst will attest that the cultural, political, or sociological context in which a performing arts event takes place is also of major importance, as are the other events that took place in close proximity, either in place or time. A good overview of such productions provides us with a 'social document' that can greatly enhance cultural studies in ways that extend far beyond the narrow confines of theatre history. For instance, data such as this can be used to monitor the health of communities, particularly when used in association with data obtained from other social science disciplines. When one researches a particular playwright one might want to know about all the productions of plays by that author; if one wants to investigate what choices a particular audience had over a period of history and compare this to, say, an ethnic breakdown of the population, one would need to know broadly all the events that took place during that time. If one wanted to do a statistical analysis on the shift in popularity of a genre over one or more generations, it is important to have knowledge of most of the relevant major and minor performance events that took place. In this context, issues of aesthetic quality and the professionalism of a production - which will of course have an impact on such studies - are not the determining factors when deciding to include or exclude events, since all events are the raw material for such research.
