Blackamoor, The         For Heaven's Sake!         Hannah         Like It Is         Sure As You're Born         Take Any Street         Under One Roof         Verdict Of One

Blackamoor, The

Synopsis:
"The Blackamoor" is the story of two painters in 17th Century Spain. One, Diego Velazquez, was eventually appointed to the King. The other, Juan de Pareja, was his slave. The story covers the life of Juan from the time he is inherited by Velazquez until the time Velazquez dies. If the subject matter sounds intriguing and unique, it is. Through the course of the play we are given every opportunity to learn about Madrid during the inquisition and a plague. We are also brought to Rome, where Velazquez paints the Pope's portrait. Near the end of the play we even go to the wedding island of the King of France. Throughout these scenes, the writer, Joseph George Caruso, is masterfully subtle at creating an interesting, informative setting, telling us of the political tyranny and economic turmoil that plagued Spain at that time. Besides historical knowledge, however, "The Blackamoor" offers another message. That is, of course, the idea of a relationship between a famous white painter and his talented slave. In 17th Century Spain, we are told, slaves were prohibited from performing creative arts, such as writing and painting. Because Juan has a talent, and because Velazquez knows it, the play has its conflict.

Notes:
by Joseph George Caruso. Music by Ulpio Minucci, Lyrics by Helen Kromer. Adapted from the Newbery Award- winning novel "I, Juan de Pareja" by Elizabeth Borton Trevino.

Hannah

Synopsis:
Hannah Huckleby, a middle-aged widow, moves into a community and joins the local church choir but she sings off key and the choir members decide she must be dismissed. Three delegates sent one after another become involved instead with the Huckleby household as Hannah's helplessness in the face of overwhelming problems touches them. In the process they are changed and they change the household. Hannah goes on being her bumbling "angel unaware" self, except astonishingly, she has learned to sing on key.

Verdict Of One

Synopsis:
Based on the physicist's premise that "all the progress of mankind to date results from the making of careful measurements," the play suggests that conversely, retrogression can also be measured. Through a series of flashbacks, a crime of rape-murder committed on a crip-pled girl by an emotionally disturbed teenager is investigated not in terms of commission but of omission. Edward Roe Cox, promising young physicist, is indicted for complicity in the crime though he was two miles away when it was committed. The prosecution, following the intricacies of societal involvement, brings Cox to the point of confession, measuring events by scientific criteria.
