Born in 1963, Neil LaBute is an American playwright, filmmaker and novelist. Also known as Mr. Nasty, due to his intense focus on dark themes of authenticity and betrayal, he arguably belongs to the school of 'in-yer-face' theater of the 90s that characteristically examined scenes of abuse. In an article from 2009 in The New York Times, LaBute addresses the labels he is given by his audiences and critics. Associated by British audiences with the raft of Angry Young Men seen in the 50s, LaBute suggests this is because he reinforces very British stereotypes of Americans as brash, consumer and car-driven, loud and more often than not, obese. Across the pond, however, Americans have proudly displayed him across Broadway. A new American television gig was recently announced; he is currently working on his third collaboration with DirecTV about love between a stepbrother and sister. He is no stranger to Hollywood, which doubtlessly fed his preoccupation with ideals of youth and beauty. He wrote the film In the Company of Men in 1997 and Your Friends and Neighbors the following year. He wrote the film adaptation for his play The Shape of Things. LaBute knows the Los Angeles stories, the power ladder and industry that he seeks to satirize in his own films. He is no stranger to controversy: previously a Mormon, he was expelled from the church when he penned Mormon characters as murderers in Bash: Latter-Day Plays. LaBute claims to base his characters on his imagination. So to what extent is he himself his characters? In the preface of Fat Pig he is refreshingly honest about his own battle to lose weight and the addictive narcissism that comes hand in hand with a change in appearance. In the movie, Helen offers to change herself for Tom, becoming complicit in the abuse she always claimed to ignore. The victim agrees with her victimizer and becomes a piece of propaganda for society that sells beauty and bodies. Helen perpetuates this cycle and indeed recycles the notion that the outer packaging is the most important. LaBute owns to seeing much of himself in the play; the weaknesses shown in humans when heroism is the harder path. With friends in high places - Paul Rudd is a friend of his, as is Aaron Eckhart - and a career going full-steam ahead, LaBute's work seems to be moving toward brighter and more lighthearted work. Studying his trajectory, it certainly appears that he relies less now on shock factor and goes instead for the emotional wrench words can provide. When Fat PigHelen meets Tom in a restaurant and they eat together for the first time it foreshadows what will surely come: a comment from him smothered with more meaning than the hotdog is drenched with ketchup. His characters' relationships with one another are analyzed and dissected, as is their equally uneasy relationship with the truth. Another character Carter; immature, inappropriate and rude, at least has the strength of his own convictions and stands by any argument he has, eventually ends up successful in his relationship. Carter seems to invoke LaBute at the start of his controversial career: unfiltered and irreverent. There is the sense that nowadays, he is sitting on the fence more and more, comfortable but not combative.

16 Pounds
Synopsis:
Playwrights Inua Ellams, Neil LaBute, Bola Agbaje, Clare Bayley, Lydia Adetunji and Pedro Miguel Rozo have joined forces with a team of scientists to present the world premiere of Mouthful, a series of plays tackling the global food crisis, at the Trafalgar Studios in September. Forming the centrepiece of Metta Theatre's 10th anniversary celebrations, the project follows four very different individuals. Sebastian is travelling to Nigeria in search of his steak-loving missing friend, GoGo is sacrificing everything for a glass of water, Erica is trying to win her daughter's affections with the rare delicacy of the last potato and Rashida just wants to eat her chocolate bar in peace. Directed by Poppy Burton-Morgan, the politically provocative piece was produced in collaboration with six of the world's top scientists Professors Tim Benton, Kamal Bawa, Suzanne Filteau, Ilkka Hanski, Molly Jahn and Tim Lang and aims to explore the global food crisis in a theatrically imaginative production. Talking about the project, Professor Benton, UK Champion for Global Food Security, said: "Our food impacts on our health and well-being, the planet's well-being and our eating habits affect the livelihoods of others throughout the world. Mouthful innovatively explores our food system and the way our demand may affect our futures."

Autobahn
Sitting in an automobile was where I first remember understanding how Drama works. Hidden in the back seat of a sedan, I quickly realized how deep the chasm or intense the claustrophobia could be inside your average family car.' Be it the medium for clandestine couplings, arguments, shelter, or ultimately transportation, the automobile is perhaps the most authentically American of spaces. In autobahn, Neil LaBute's provocative new collection of one-act plays set within the confines of the front seat, the playwright employs his signature plaintive insight to great effect, investigating the inchoate apprehension that surrounds the steering wheel. each of these seven brief vignettes explore the ethos of perception and relationship - from a make-out session gone awry, to a kidnapping thinly disguised as a road trip, a reconnaissance mission involving the rescue of a Nintendo 64 to a daughter's long ride home after her release from rehab. the result is an unsettling montage that gradually reveals the scabrous force of words left unsaid while illuminating the delicate interplay between intention and morality, capturing the essence of Middle America and the myriad paths which cross its surface.

Bash
Neil LaBute's Bash is a collection of three darkly brilliant one-act plays. In 'medea Redux', a woman tells of her complex and ultimately tragic relationship with her junior high-school english teacher. In 'Iphigenia in Orem', a Utah businessman confides in a stranger in a Las Vegas hotel room, confessing to an especially chilling crime. In 'a Gaggle of Saints', a young Mormon couple separately recount the violent events of an anniversary weekend in New York City. all three are unblinking portraits of the evils that are abroad in everyday life; each is distinguished by the raw and yet lyrical intensity that has become Neil Labute's signature.

Fat Pig
Synopsis:
Cow.' 'slob.' 'Pig.' How many insults can you hear before you have to stand up and defend the woman you love?Tom faces just that question when he falls for Helen, a bright, funny, sexy young woman who happens to be plus-sized - and then some. Forced to explain his new relationship to his shallow (although shockingly funny) friends, finally Tom comes to terms with his own preconceptions of the importance of conventional good looks. Neil LaBute's sharply drawn play not only critiques our slavish adherence to Hollywood ideals of beauty but boldly questions our own ability to change what we dislike about ourselves.

In the Beginning
Synopsis:
American playwright Neil LaBute presents a simple, cynical tale of a middle-class student activist played by Tessa Parr and her long-suffering father (Cunningham again). She is that impeccable mix of spoilt rich kid relying on daddy's largesse and dangerous revolutionary wannabe. He is a sucker for her latest sob story. - Philip Fisher, British Theatre Guide
Notes:
theatre Uncut co-artistic director Emma Callander said, "theatre Uncut was created to raise debate and galvanise action around political issues that affect all of our lives. We do this by making our plays available to as many people as possible. "We feel honoured to be working with writers of such high calibre and it thrills me that performances of these powerful short plays will be happening simultaneously across the world, from Scarborough to South Africa. "With the continued cuts to public services in the UK against a landscape of civil unrest and enforced austerity across the world, the need to speak out in resistance is stronger now than ever before."

In the Company Of Men
Synopsis:
in the company of men is a black comedy about a psychological love triangle set within 1990s corporate culture. the story of two white collar-managers, Chad and Howard, who maliciously plot to jointly romance the lonely, deaf, beautiful office temp Christine before simultaneously dumping her, is cool and compelling in its depiction of the worst sorts of emotional abuse. What begins as a cat-and-mouse game of one-upmanship quickly escalates into full-scale psychological warfare, with the woman merely a pawn easily captured and tossed aside in a dark, wicked duel for corporate ascension.

In the Land Of Uz
the King James Version of the Bible (KJV) is a foundation stone of the english language. the KJV was composed as a collective project and written to be spoken. Sixty-Six Books has been created, in the spirit of the original, in the same way. Pulpit to print; stage to page; mediated through many forms oral and written, the KJV has, since its inception, been a fundamental part of written and spoken english. This is a work that has travelled to every continent of the globe. It has been shared as a melodic instrument of inspiration, illumination and mutual understanding; and it has also been wielded as a tool of colonial oppression. Sixty-Six Books is a fresh interpretation of the KJV for the new millennium, celebrating and challenging the traditions and achievements of this great work on the occasion of its 400th anniversary. the curators of this project have gathered together a formidable and inspiring line-up of the best established and emerging writing talent to produce a new version of the KJV for thetwenty-first century. each writer has created anew a book of the KJV - as prose, poetry, Drama, performance, song, or ground-breaking digital form. each writer has spoken back to the KJV with untrammeled inventiveness of the imagination. the voices of Sixty-Six Books, drawn from across five continents, innovate, transmute, transpose, reinvent and talk back to four hundredyears of history. all the works that make up Sixty-Six Books are written to be spoken. Culminating in major performance events at the Bush theatre and Westminster abbey in 2011 in London, Sixty-Six Books is a contribution towards the mutual curiosity, tolerance, and force of collective enterprise and shared humanity that characterizes the international and ancient Arts of writing and spoken performance

Possible, The
In The Possible, two young women meet at one's apartment with dual purposes. Woman #1 is there to give an earful to Woman #2, who seduced the former's boyfriend. Woman #1 is taken aback, though, by the reaction of her counterpart, who calmly states that she bedded her friend's lover only to get him "out of the way" in her pursuit of Woman #1. Seems that Woman #2 was smitten immediately by her adversary when they met briefly at a party a year or so earlier. This only further angers Woman #1, who resents that her boyfriend has been used and wasted, since she tells Woman #2 she has absolutely no homosexual desire for her, and never has. Woman #2 coolly listens to the rants and ravings, which seem to be less than whole-hearted refutations. The longer that Woman #1 remains in the apartment, the more one can sense where the conclusion will take these two characters.

Reasons To Be Pretty
America's obsession with physical beauty is confronted headlong in this brutal and exhilarating new play. In reasons to be pretty, Greg's tight-knit social circle is thrown into turmoil when his offhanded remarks about a female coworker's pretty face (and his girlfriend's lack thereof) get back to said girlfriend. But that's just the beginning. Greg's best buddy Kent, and Kent's wife Carly also enter into the picture and the emotional equation becomes exponentially more complicated. as their relationship crumbles, their friends are pulled into the fray and all are forced to confront a sea of deceit, infidelity and betrayed trust in their journey to answer that oh-so-American question: How much is pretty worth?

This Is How It Goes
Belinda and Cody Phipps appear to be a typical American couple: teenage sweethearts now married with children and a luxurious home. Typical except that Cody is in almost every respect an outsider - rich and black and different, in the words of Belinda, who finds herself attracted to a white former classmate who has recently returned to town. as the battle for her affections is waged against a backdrop as seemingly serene as a Norman Rockwell painting, Belinda and Cody frankly question the foundation of their initial attraction, opening the door wide to a swath of bigotry, deception, and betrayal.

Wrecks
Synopsis:
a man in his mid-50s is mourning his wife's death. People often gossiped about the age difference between them - she was 15 years older - but Edward Carr didn't care, because "she was worth loving". He won her from her first husband after a fistfight, and they built a profitable business, which he calls his "kingdom", recovering and renting classic cars (the ostensible reason for the title). the sex was always mighty: he never tired of "being inside her". Yes, LaBute's taboo du jour is incest, and the play is a loose adaptation of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex.
