Ros Lane; born August 14, 1937, died May 10, 2005. An actress and director involved in the formative years of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, has died at her home in Helensburgh after a long fight against cancer. During her year as an actress at the Traverse, she premiered several important roles including Mere Ubu and Beebee Fenstermaker. She directed Next Time I'll Sing to You with Pamela Craig (later of The Archers) both in Edinburgh and at John Calder's Ledlanet Nights. At Ledlanet, most of the audience expected to attend a concert of lieder rather than James Saunders's intellectual examination of "being". She was a talented character actress. In one Scarborough season, she played a 12-year- old child, then an artistic "menopausal" mother. She was as at home with Gwendoline in The Importance of Being Ernest, as she was with Norah in A Doll's House, and Estelle, in Sartre's Huis Clos - the production which opened the Traverse. She scripted an introductory act to a Hansel and Gretel for children at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham and wrote an adaptation of Pinocchio, which has been performed in theatres in Edinburgh and in Ayr. In 1965, she married the director Terry Lane. Together they opened and established their own bookshop. She coined its name, Bookworms, in Helensburgh. They later took over the Milngavie bookshop. In 1990, she gained her BA from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and determined to continue to work in the theatre and encourage participation in it.
