Michael Laurence is a playwright, actor, and director. He graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he studied at The Experimental Theater Wing with Kevin Kuhlke, Mary Overlie, and Ryscard Cieslak, and The Classical Studio with Louis Scheeder and Deloss Brown. After college, he studied directing with Anne Bogart, and worked with theater legends Judith Malina and Joe Chaiken. He is the author of the plays Krapp,39, Hamlet In Bed, The Escape Artist (Tribeca Lab 1994), The Escape Artist: Virgil's Cauldron (Phil Bosakowski Theatre, 1999), and the co-creator (with playwright/performer Edgar Oliver) of Chop Off Your Ear (Angel Orensanz Foundation, 2000). He also wrote and directed the independent feature film, Escape Artists (Anthology Film Archives' New Filmmakers Series, 2005). He is a founding member of The Cliplight Theater, for which he has directed Jesse McKinley's Quick Bright Things(HERE Arts Center, 1995), Edgar Oliver's Master of Monstrosities (La MaMa, 1996), I Am a Coffin (La MaMa, 1997),My Green Hades (Phil Bosakowski Theater, 1999), The Drowning Pages (La MaMa, 2000), and Maverick by George Demas (Culture Project, 2003). As an actor, Michael has performed extensively in New York and regional theater, film and television. His most recent acting credits include the Broadway revivals of Eric Bogosian's Talk Radio, and Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms, the New York premiere of Michael Hollinger's Opus (Primary Stages), the Off-Broadway revival ofTwo Rooms by Lee Blessing (Platform Group), the Off-Broadway premiere of The Diary of a Teenage Girl (New Georges), John Proctor in The Crucible(Hartford Stage),and Starbuck in The Rainmaker (Arena Stage). He also appeared in Eric Bogosian's Humpty Dumpty (McCarter), The Pavilion (Westport Playhouse), The Faculty Room(Humana/Louisville), Tooth of Crime and Book of Days (Signature Theater, NYC), Things of Dry Hours (Portland Center Stage), Wintertime (Wilma), Three Days of Rain (Studio Arena), Tape (Stamford), Inventing Van Gogh(Seattle Rep), Troilus and Cressida (The Shakespeare Theater), Edgar Oliver's Hands In Wartime (LaMama), and Marc Palmieri's Levittown(Axis,NYC). In 2010, he played the recurring role of "Barry the Homeless Man" on the TV series Damages, and in 2011 was a series regular on Adult Swim's The Heart, She Holler. Krapp, 39, premiered at the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival where it won an award for Outstanding Solo Show. Subsequently, the show enjoyed a critically acclaimed six month run Off-Broadway at the Soho Playhouse, where it was a New York Times "Critics' Pick," and was nominated for a 2009 Drama Desk Award ("Best Solo Performance"), and an Oppenheimer Award for Best New American Play. In 2010, the play had it's UK premiere at The Tristan Bates Theatre in London, followed by a run at Axis-Ballymun in Dublin. Krapp, 39 is published in Plays and Playwrights 2009.
