Mangan's Last Gasp
Synopsis:
1849. Dublin. A squalid hovel in Bride Street. Dr. William Wilde, on his rounds, stumbles upon the apparently dead body of the destitute poet, James Clarence Mangan. Attempting the routine completion of a Death Certificate, Dr. Wilde quickly discovers that the corpse he is dealing with is far from ready to be consigned to medical or literary history. the doctor is quickly drawn into Mangan's strange and fantastical world, as the poet unravels in fits and starts the bizarre riddle of his life. Mangan's Last Gasp is a surreal and darkly comic imagining of a death-bed encounter almost entirely related in Mangan's own words. Mangan has been described as "Ireland's greatest poet before Yeats" and was a troubled alcoholic best remembered for such great lyric poems as My Dark Rosaleen, Siberia and the Nameless One as well as for his highly eccentric image as 'the Man in the Cloak'. Doctor William Wilde was a leading opthalmic surgeon, polymath and society figure. He was the founder of Dublin's eye and ear Hospital, and father of Oscar. An humourous, affectionate and moving portrait of one of our greatest poets.
