Robert Lepage was born on December 12th 1957 in Quebec City, Quebec. His mother, Germaine, had had several miscarriages and so his parents decided to adopt. they had adopted a boy and a girl and then his mother became pregnANT again and the result was Robert. Later a sister, Linda was born - Linda is now his personal manager. When he was five he was diagnosed with a rare form of alopecia which meANT that he lost all body hair. It is said that he now has a wardrobe full of wigs. He was bullied at school and became depressed. In his teens he tried smoking a joint, it had opium in it and he had an allergic reaction and he nearly died and this led to a complete breakdown. Robert had panic attacks and became acrophobic. He took Drama lessons to overcome his shyness and found something that he loved. He attended the Conservatoire d'art Dramatique in Quebec and Alan Knaipp's Theatre school in Paris. Returning from France he began writing and directing. One of the actresses in the Theatre company he was in - Theatre Humm - was raped and murdered and the police decided that Robert was their main suspect. He was not able to clear his name for two years. actually it was two years, two months and two days after the murder that an unstable numerologist confessed. Lepage used the experience to write "Polygraph" (he had had to take one during the police investigation). In 1994 he founded ex Machina a multi disciplinary Theatre group. also in 1994 he was putting "Needles and Opium" on in Chicago. One morning he went to a workshop led by Kevin McCoy, actor and writer. they met again that evening at a party. the next evening they went out for a meal and as Kevin said "the rest is history. It was both a simple and momentous beginning". they had a long distance relationship and in 1997 Kevin moved to Quebec to be with Robert.

887

Synopsis:
887 is a journey into the realm of memory. The idea for this project originated from the childhood memories of Robert Lepage; years later, he plunges into the depths of his memory and questions the relevance of certain recollections. Why do we remember the phone number from our youth yet forget our current one? How does a childhood song withstand the test of time, permanently ingrained in our minds, while the name of a loved one escapes us? Why does meaningless information stick with us, but other more useful information falls away? How does memory work? What are its underlying mechanisms? How does a personal memory resonate within the collective memory? 887 considers various commemorative markers-the names of parks, streets, stelae and monuments-and the historical heritage around us that we no longer notice. Consequently, the play also focuses on oblivion, the unconscious, and this memory that fades over time and whose limits are compensated for by digital storage, mountains of data and virtual memory. In this era, how is theatre, an art based on the act of remembering, still relevant today? All of these questions are distilled into a story where Lepage, somewhere between a theatre performance and a conference, reveals the suffering of an actor who-by definition, or to survive-must remember not only his text, but also his past, as well as the historical and social reality that has shaped his identity.

Lipsynch

Synopsis:
Lipsynch is structured in nine units, each of which concentrates on a figure from the floating gallery of characters who populate a series of overlapping plots, building to an exquisitely moving and unexpected climax. as so often in Lepage's work, the protagonists find themselves adrift in the world and, as we follow their journeys, we become deeply involved in their search for identity. the production moves from war-torn Vienna to pre-revolutionary Nicaragua and contemporary London, encountering those who have lost the power of speech, are tangled in linguistic confusion or for whom reality and imagination have become indistinguishable. From the primal sounds of a baby's cry to the sophistication of an operatic aria, their interwoven destinies create a startling and tender montage of humanity.
