Synopsis:

This play is a re-working of the Job story from the Bible. It brings the well-known Old Testament tale and combines it with the New Testament story of Jesus: where the biblical Job gets left on a dung-hill, this Job is impaled on a spit by Roman soldiers in a distortion of a crucifix. Job, who starts off enjoying good health, a large, happy family, and many successful business ventures, quickly gets knocked off his perch. A series of ever-worsening bad news leaves him entirely divested of prosperity and family, no better than the many beggars who come scavenging bits and scraps from his table. As he gets assailed by plagues, his faith in God is challenged, although his Talmudic friends convince him to stay within his religion. However, when Roman soldiers arrive and proclaim a horrible death to whomever refuses to renounce their God, those same friends abandon him in order to save their own lives. Job, of course, will not give up on God and is brutally killed by the Romans. As he is dying, a circus arrives, and the play takes a Fellini-esque turn as the circus folk bargain with Job for his entry into the circus as the star attraction-people will pay a lot to see extreme human suffering.

Original Playwright - Hanoch Levin, translated by Sandra Silverston

Synopsis:

This is the American premiere of the absurdist black comedy, The Whore From Ohio by the late Israeli playwright Hanoch Levin. The following description is from the show's press release: "The Whore from Ohio is a fable of an old tramp named Hoibitter, who has dreamed all his life about an unattainable high-class prostitute in America. As his 70th birthday approaches, he seeks to give himself a birthday present that will suit his pocket: a visit to a street whore. His son, also a tramp, imagines his father as a secretly wealthy man and dreams of the vast inheritance that will one day be his. The son is tormented over the idea of his father throwing away 100 shekels, and knowing his father is impotent, this infuriates him further. The street whore, far more practical than both of them, is satisfied with the old man's meager savings and relieves him of them in return for an illusion of love. In the end, fantasy remains the only redeeming force in their miserable lives."

Synopsis:

The play is a metaphysical farce about a conflict in an Israeli family between a wedding and a funeral. Winter Wedding starts out with a deathbed promise. Right before Latshek Boobitshek's mother, Alteh, dies, she challenges her son to make sure there are family members at her funeral. He vows to deliver a tight, unified family circle. The problem is, Alteh's only relatives are her cousins, who are marrying off their daughter, Velvetsia, tomorrow. Alteh's funeral would conflict with an enterprise that has been delicately planned and cost them many precious years of scrimping and saving ("Four hundred guests, eight hundred roast chickensin the garbage!"). If they never hear of the funeral, they won't have to go, so the cousins spend the play eluding the news of their Aunt's death by evading their grieving relative.
