Celebrating Chekov: The Bear/Afterplay

Synopsis:
Rehearsed readings. Described by Chekov himself as "a trivial little vaudeville in the French Manner" The Bear is a hilarious one act play featuring an aging manservant, a beautiful young widow and a handsome farmer who challenges her to a duel! Adapted by Brian Friel, The Financial Times has described this comic gem as superbly funny and vivid. In contrast the bitter sweet Afterplay (written by Friel) pays homage to Chekovs most famous works The Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya by intertwining the lives of two characters from these plays. Set in a run down Moscow cafe in the 1920s the piece examines the dual power and danger of the imagination when real life is difficult to bear.

On A Clear Day You Can See Dover

Synopsis:
How do you catch a conscience? Is the play the thing? Ice & Fire is a company dedicated to exactly this - raising awareness of human rights issues through verbatim theatre. Founder and scriptwriter Sonja Linden exposed on Wednesday night, in a superb and moving one-off Dramatisation, the plight of asylum-seekers in Calais, and their absolute and often misplaced faith in england, the promised land. the white cliffs of Dover, on a clear day, can be glimpsed from Calais, symbolic as any rainbow.

It's late afternoon when a Jewish woman arrives at her sisters' home in the occupied city of Ramallah. Who Do We Think We Are?

Synopsis:
What makes you the person you are today? Your genes? Your experiences? The experiences of your parents and grandparents? In 2013 a group of older actors met in a rehearsal room to explore their family histories. What emerged over the next year was a remarkable collection of stories - from being a child in the Warsaw Ghetto, to surviving the atomic bomb in Nagasaki, to getting stoned at Woodstock. Who Do We Think We Are? is a kaleidoscope of personal stories from 1914 to 2014 infused with live music and physicality to create a life-enhancing evening in the theatre. Fast-paced, funny and poignant, this is the first piece of work created by Visible, Britain's only professional theatre ensemble made up entirely of 'older' performers in their 60s, 70s and 80s with an array of credits across theatre, film and television. Highly international, its members include Togo Igawa (the first Japanese actor at the Royal Shakespeare Company), Ruth Posner (a child survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto) and original member of the London Contemporary Dance Company Imola Gaspar, who has performed extensively with the National Theatres of Hungary and Romania.
