Native New Yorker LindaAnn Loschiavo is an author as well as a published poet, magazine columnist, journalist, and dramatist. She saw her first Broadway show at age 4 and wrote her first one-act drama at age 10; her first play was produced in Brooklyn, NY and was onstage for several months. Since then she's written a number of plays and seen them come to life onstage in New York and in foreign countries. The year 2013 has had a distinct Mae West flavor. The July issue of The Dramatist published her cover story: "Mae West, Sex, Censorship, Prison, and Politics." In August, for the past nine years, she has organized events to commemorate the birth of Mae West, born in Brooklyn on August 17, 1893. However, this summer she partnered with actress Darlene Violette and together they decided to revive a "melodrama of the 1890s Bowery," written in 1928 by Mae West, who performed her 3-hour play (on and off) until 1951. In 1933, Paramount Pictures had released a shorter, sanitized version of this lusty play, "Diamond Lil," for the screen under a new title: "She Done Him Wrong." Realizing that the play's gritty underworld themes were lost in this family-friendly 66-minute motion picture, Ms. Loschiavo revised "Diamond Lil" with all of the sex and none of the censorship. Darlene Violette starred in the title role, supported by a cast of eight. "Diamond Lil" began its run in Manhattan in August, to commemorate the 120th birthday of Mae West, and it will remain onstage until November 24, 2013. Also, on November 23, 2013, Darlene Violette will star in "Courting Mae West: Sex, Censorship and Secrets," a serious-minded comedy for a cast of seven written by Ms. Loschiavo. "Courting Mae West" will be presented at Jefferson Market Library (formerly Jefferson Market Court), in the original court room where Mae West faced a hostile magistrate after her arrest in 1927. Ms. Loschiavo is also trying to complete a book, "Flirting with the Fire Gods," due for release in 2014. Producers and theatre owners are welcome to contact her.
