Michael Marks is a former Mississippi Teacher of the Year (1988) who has received national honors, including Disney's Outstanding Teacher of the Performing Arts Award in 1995 and the Milken National Education Award in 1994. In addition, he is on the Executive Committee of the Mississippi Arts Commission, serves on the steering committee The National Arts Education Partnership. He is especially proud of leading the national charge for theatre and dance certification by the National Board for Teaching Standards, the organization charged with establishing what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do and which oversees the rigorous process through which teachers become board certified. Having directed over 40 shows at Hattiesburg High School, he is a national officer of the National Education Association and vice-chair of the Secondary School Theatre Division of the Southeastern Theatre Conference.

Synopsis:
An emotional journey into the hearts and souls of Hurricane Katrina's survivors, THE KATRINA PROJECT: Hell and High Water is based on actual interviews, collected stories, and found texts, providing a voice for the greatest natural disaster in our country's recorded history. The play follows a diverse group of characters as they reflect on and experience the devastation, heartbreak, anger, and, ultimately, hope of the thousands affected by the Category 5 storm. (All royalties from THE KATRINA PROJECT: Hell and High Water will be donated to hurricane relief charities.)
