Morna Murphy Martell has worn a number of hats in the Theater since she arrived from england as a young girl. She started out as an actress on Broadway in "A Taste of Honey" and since then has also been a playwright and director. She was awarded a National endowment for the Arts (NeA) Playwriting Grant, two of her children's musicals have been funded by grants from the Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island (COAHSI), and she received a 2006 Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) grant to present "A Mini Tempest" this summer in NYC. She has had a number of her plays presented in New York, California and in the West end, London, england. In New York: "I'll Leave You Here To Die, Kathleen," and "Roundelay," at the 13th Street Theatre; "Wally For Queen" at Works By Women, and "the Great Truman Capote" at the Clurman on Theatre Row. "the Great Truman Capote" premiered at the historic Fortune Theatre in the West end, London, played the edinburgh Festival, Scotland, and at the Kennedy Center, Wash. DC. In Hollywood: "the Charm Collector" "Shelley" and "God Is On Our Side" played at the Next Stage Theatre. Morna has also written the librettos for a number of musical plays and comedies. In NYC: "Mumbo Jumbo" at Lincoln Center - "Shelley" at the Carter Theatre - "Only A Woman" at the Foundation Theatre - "the Windsor Follies" at the West Bank Cafe (originally presented in the Royal Suite at the Waldorf Towers). In May, 2005, "Oh, What A Night" was staged as a concert performance in Staten Island. In Hollywood: "edensong" (originally titled "the Musical Book"), had a successful run, as well as other productions, "Only A Woman" and "the Windsor Follies." For children's Theatre she wrote "the Princess And the Swineherd," based on a Hans Christian Anderson story; a Biblical musical "Adam & eve & Jonah & the Whale;" "Santa Claus Is Missing," from a story by L. Frank Baum, author of "the Wizard Of Oz," that is now an annual event at the Staten Island Children's Museum; "the Water Babies" adapted from the British classic by Charles Kingsley; and annually she presents Shakespeare for Children - one hour adaptations - "A Mini Midsummer Night's Dream," "A Mini Comedie Of errors" and "A Mini Twelfe Night" - at the West Side Community Garden in Manhattan. Five of her plays were published in April, 2005 by Puck Press under the title "CLASSICS 4 KIDS." Morna is a member of the Dramatist Guild and Actors equity.
