Maire Martello (Playwright). Her current play "The Lodger," is an adaptation of the 1913 suspense novel of the same name, written by Marie Belloc Lowndes. It is currently playing at The WorkShop Theatre at 312 West 36th Street, NYC from January 8 - February 1st, 2009. As an actress, Maire has studied with Stella Adler, John Strasberg and at LAMDA. She has appeared off-Broadway in "Waiting for Godot" and "Right You Are, If You Think You Are" and worked on numerous soaps and films. As a board member of The Black Box of Asbury Park, she directed their first Equity production, Arlene Hutton's "Last Train to Nibroc," as well as producing and directing the works of Pirandello and Tennessee Williams. She is a faculty member of Sherrill Milnes' and Maria Zouves' training program for young opera singers, VoicExperience, where she teaches acting in New York and FloridA. Maire holds a degree in English Literature from Finch College, New York City and is currently working on a play about the American author Shirley Jackson. She is married to John Martello, actor and executive director of The Players, America's oldest theatrical private club.

Lodger, The

Synopsis:
Set in Victorian London during a violent crime spree against women, The Lodger tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bunting, an impoverished couple, who take in a mysterious tenant named Mr. Sleuth. While Mr. Sleuth has plenty of money, he comes without references or luggage. Slowly, the Buntings come to suspect that their generous and religious lodger may very well be the man Scotland Yard calls "The Avenger." Should the Buntings alert the police or continue to live in the comfort the lodger's funds provide?

Notes:
The current edition of Time Out New York (1/22-28/09) gives "The Lodger" three stars, praising its cast And "its little charge of Drama."
