Since graduating in 1988, Derek has split his time between working as a writer and theatre director and teaching in Further and Higher Education. He began writing as a teenager; when he was 15, the great literary agent Margaret Ramsay took him under her wing and offered much support and encouragement. While many of his plays are either written for young performers or young audiences (generally 14+ in both cases), he has also successfully written for adult audiences. His play GoStay (1996) premiered at Clywd Theatr Cymru, Dusty Pens (1997) has toured the UK, and two short plays - Grapeshot (2005) and Eggshells (2006) - premiered at Theatre 503, London. His play Our World Is In Colour, written to be performed by any number of people, has received numerous productions by youth groups; a version of this play written specifically for four men (and, confusingly, with the same title) toured the North-West of England in 2008. Derek has also written several adaptations, including Treasure Island which premiered at Eye Castle, Suffolk. In recent years, he has worked as a lyricist and librettist on musicals, opera, a cantata and stand-alone songs. Much of this work has been with Michael Betteridge. Their site-specific musical Indigestion has been performed at the Lowry Centre, Salford, and the Riverside Studios, Hammersmith. Derek has a M.Phil. in Playwriting Studies from the University of Birmingham. He was brought up in the North-West of England and currently lives in Manchester.

He tells his story, playing a wide range of characters including a couple of Kings, three contemporary TV presenters, and a spider. In turns, funny and moving; ultimately this is about a forgotten man, the transitory nature of existence and how history is told by the winners.
