Private Matter, A
Synopsis:
Mervyn, an academic wants to write the biography of General Black-Matheson and has come to talk to his widow and two sons. There was some scandal in the War and the General was sent to a mental institution and the family have lived with the disgrace ever since. The scandal is never spoken of - but it seems that they all know some of what happened. Christopher the oldest son is against the biography being written and Anne is now against the book being done too. Mervyn reveals that he knows the secret and whilst Christopher and Anne are out of the room Anthony, the other son tells of how he found out about his father. Towards the end of the Second World War the Major was ordered to have a parade in honour of the founding of the battalion and after all the fighting and deaths of troops he feels that it is totally wrong to do it. On the day of the parade he tries to go to the parade ground naked. Anne tells how she has tried to live with the disgrace and shame. Anthony tells her that what his father did was neither shameful or disgraceful and to prove it takes all his clothes off. Christopher hits him with a bottle. Later Mervyn tells Anthony that his father's action was not a protest statement but that he had in fact had a nervous breakdown.
