Liberty

Liberty
Liberty follows the journey of a cheerless ideologue, Evariste Gamelin. We first meet an artist seeking to become a politician at a picnic in what was known as the month of Meadows in Year I of the short-lived revolutionary calendar. His fellow revellers are an ill-matched bunch: Elodie, an embroidress, wants the love of Evariste; Rose is a chorus girl with higher ambitions and Philippe is an unprincipled fellow artist. By far the most intriguing pairing are the oldies. Louise, a political changeling desperate to meet the People's Friend, Marat, while a louche Duke transformes into a sweet-natured puppet-maker. their brief Edenic idyll soon comes to grief as the Revolution gets serious under "Robespierre and (the) nine lunatics in charge of France". As Evariste becomes an increasingly unbending magistrate and continues to climb the greasy pole, his friends are incriminated one by one until, inevitably, he too falls like dead Marat and Robespierre, allowing a hopeful ending.

Man of Terror, The

Synopsis:
In a Paris swept by fear and hunger, Evariste Gamelin a revolutionary young artist appointed magistrate is given the power of life and death over his fellow citizens. Believing that the Revolution divides the world between the virtuous and the evil, Evariste sees conspiracy everywhere, while his love for his fiancee Elodie is distorted and darkly eroticized by the rhetoric and violence of the day. Inspired by Anatole France's Les Dieux On Soif, the Man of Terror depicts the rapid descent of civilisation from a crystalisation of beautiful ideals into cruelty, mob rule and state terror. It shows how fanaticism, intense idealism and unbridled single mindedness lead inexorably to disaster. It's a story for today.
