Born in 1952, Richard Mays has acted for both professional and amateur theatre. He now works as a radio announcer for Radio New Zealand. He became a 'playwright' by virtue of owning a typewriter and being unemployed. Most of his plays so far have been the result of collaborations, his first efforts coming while he was a Drama Studies student at Victoria University. In 1974 he wrote ANTOINE EMPEROR; described as 'showing promise', he may re-write it one day. MEANSKIN'S MAGIC MASQUERADE was a collaboration with Vagabond Theatre and in 1975 he collaborated with Christine Kraus and Harold Merriman to write STAND for the Wellington Tenants' Union. As a member of the infamous Red Dragon Theatre, he wrote THE SUN'S GONNA SHINE ON OUR BACK DOOR SOME DAY, SHE'S A LADY/LIVING DOLL, a political theatre manifesto and odd bits of agit-prop. He has just completed a kids' play that he began with Harold Merriman and Red Dragon Theatre in 1975, THE ROOSTER CROWS AT MIDNIGHT (1979)
