Born in Dublin, educated by the Christian Brothers of Synge Street, McCann worked as journalist and wrote plays for Radio eireann and later, The Abbey Theatre. Elected to government in 1939 where he served until 1954. He also sat as Dublin's Lord Mayor, 1946-47 and 1964-65
