John is originally from County Armagh in Northern Ireland. He now lives in Scotland where his short play THIS LONG TIME was given a staged reading at the Traverse Theatre as part of TEN and where another play, the NEXT OF IT, was read as part of Stellar Quines' REHEARSAL ROOM 16. He was one of four emerging writers selected to participate in the Playwrights' Studio Scotland mentoring programme during 2009-1010. His latest play, the CLEANROOM, was recently staged by Tinderbox Theatre Company in Belfast as part of the acclaimed TRUE NORTH ensemble project. [image credit: Alan McCredie]

Cleanroom, The
Synopsis:
Karen has managed the cleanroom of a pharmaceutical packaging firm for fifteen years. It's more than a just a job - the cleanroom has been her place of refuge during turbulent times. Suddenly nothing is safe. Karen's secret relationship with employee Saul is attracting unwanted attention. Her late husband's cronies are watching her day and night. And the factory is facing closure. Just when it seems things couldn't get worse, into the cleanroom walks Molly. She claims to have been transferred to help the cleanroom survive the day, but it soon becomes clear that she has very personal motives for being there. As the workforce shrinks and time runs out, Karen, Saul and Molly are forced to confront some dangerous truths about their past.

In celebration of our 50th anniversary, we invited fifty emergent playwrights to work with us over the course of our birthday year. the worldwide search for the Traverse Fifty started last September with a challenge to write a 500-word Play for Edinburgh. Next Of It, The
Synopsis:
A black comedy, set in County Armagh, about family secrets and the legacy of silence. An old blind woman is digging her grave. She enlists her teenage grand-daughter to dig with her, to the disgust of the girl's mother who bans the girl from returning. However, the girl does go back the following day to help her grandmother and in so doing, learns the secret which has driven the family apart with silence and reproaches for as long as she can remember.
