I first met John McKendrick in 1966 when he was teaching at Mirfield Secondary School in West Yorkshire. The school had a good drama tradition which continues to this day. John taught English and drama for a year there. Prior to that he had worked as a social worker in Tower Hamlets after obtaining his degree in English Literature. In 1967 he obtained an artists in residence position at Bretton Hall College Wakefield ( teacher training college with a very strong bias to drama and the arts) During this time he wrote and directed several plays with students at Bretton and Leeds university. Shortly after this he wrote and directed Llud, first performed at the Ilkley Literature festival. During this time he moved to a cottage at Pickles Hill on the edge of Bronte country where he wrote and published poetry ( published under the title of "Pickles Hill Music" of which I have a copy) once a month he and other writers and musicians got together to perform their new works at the cottage. He was also writing other plays and worked on translating novels from French literature. After a few years he moved to London having been contracted by the National Theatre in London to write six plays. Unfortunately he died before he completed that contract. John was the adopted son of Dr. and Mrs Mckendrick a local GP in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire. (Now deceased) He tried to trace his birth mother and discovered that her surname was Reece though was never able to contact her. He also discovered that one of the conditions of his adoption was that he had to receive a good education. Consequently he was a border at one of the prominent public schools.
