McKinley was born in Carlow town. His debut play, Small Box Psychosis, was first performed in 1992 and was subsequently presented at the University of California and at the European Festival of Comedy in Austria. His second play, The Lithium Waltz, was first performed in 1995, and later at the Circle Rep Theatre in New York. Plays not listed here include Bad Blood Elixir, which was performed at London's Bridewell Theatre during the RSC Fringe Festival in 1995. McKinley was nominated in 2009 for Best New Play in the Irish Theatre Awards for Elysium Nevada. He was shortlisted for the Hennessy Literary Award in 2008 and again in 2010.

Lithium Waltz, The
Synopsis:
It is Billy's first day at the nut house. He has to fill out a questionnaire. the inmates decide to help him. there is Tommy Tango a hypo-active ballroom dancer. Nymphomaniac Lydia. the Professor who is making moonshine but believes it is rocket fuel. Joey a compulsive liar. Nurse Priscilla comes to check his answers. Billy freaks out more and more with each person who comes to help him and gets driven right over the edge

Small Box Psychosis
Synopsis:
Mr Schacht a lawyer gets into the elevator to be taken up to his 14th floor apartment. Charlie the elevator operator stops between floors and pulls out a gun. He forces Mr Schacht to exchange clothes. then Eddie who is also an elevator operator gets in. He is dressed in drag - he has been stealing clothes from tenants. Charlie and Eddie are going to kill Mr Schacht but they all get stoned instead. they decide to kill Mrs Schacht instead and Eddie will take her place. the elevator arrives - it has all been Mr Schacht's fantasy
