Novelist! biographer and playwright, with an international reputation since 1965. He schooled with Joan Littlewood in London's East End Theatre Royal where he became sucessively "fireman, electrician and failed actor" and went on to write THE ROCKING CAVE for the Mercury Theatre's 1973 Festival production in Auckland where it was an immediate success. He has written and produced many dialogue-documentaries for the BBC and CBC and his controversial radio play 1895 has recently been adapted for the stage. His plays combine humour with social issues and provoke questions about small communities which are not always easily answered. Born in Auckland in 1931, McNeish divides his time between a remote New Zealand community and Europe.
