Paul B McNulty writes historical fiction based on real events in 18th century Ireland. His credentials include editorship of a student magazine, The Anvil, followed by publication of scientific and popular papers during a career in Biosystems Engineering at University College Dublin. After retirement, he studied The Genealogy of the Anglo-Norman Lynches who settled in Galway which unearthed a treasure-trove of stories. His first novel, Spellbound by Sibella, was published in 2013 by Club Lighthouse CLP, Edmonton, Alberta who published his second novel The Abduction of Anne O'Donel in 2014 and his third novel A Story of the Bodkin Murders in 2015. Paul also published his genealogical research in 2013 and a novella, A Rebel Romance in 2014, both with CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. His literary experience inspired him to write plays based on extracts from his writings. UCD Dramatic Society included a reading of his play Spellbound by Sibella in their Theatre Festival on 10-11 November 2014. In October 2015, it received favourable reviews from the Theatre Development Centre, Cork and, more recently, from the Abbey Theatre, Dublin and Papatango Theatre Company, London. In response to a call from the UCD Dramsoc Mini Plays Festival, he submitted a five-minute play, Elopement, which was staged on 14-16 October 2015. Paul has also written a second play based on an extract from his novel The Abduction of Anne O'Donel. His third play 1798: A Rebel Romance was staged as part of the Semester 3 programme of UCD Dramsoc on 18-22 April 2016. His fourth play, The Bodkin Murders, is written in the format of a court-room drama. His most recent play, Hijinks in Hibernia, is a modernized adaptation of his first play, Spellbound by Sibella. Members of The Corner Table writers group, of which Paul is a founding member, have critiqued each scene of each of his four plays. Paul is now working on a biography of his late aunt, Margaret Mary 'May' McNulty who trained as a singer in Milan and played international bridge for Ireland. Paul lives in Dublin. He is married to Treasa with three children and three grandchildren.

1798: A Rebel Romance - A Stage Play.
When Cecilia Lynch falls in love with John Moore, a United Irishman, she finds herself drawn into the web of revolution. The illegitimate daughter of the late Sir Harry Lynch-Blosse stands by her fiancé when General Humbert routs the redcoats through Castlebar. Cecilia is jubilant when the Frenchman appoints Moore, formerly of Alicante and the Sorbonne, as President of Connaught within the declared Irish Republic. Their hopes for the future of a free and United Ireland are unrestrained. The enduring theme of rebel romance is explored in my play through the fictional liaison of Cecilia Lynch and John Moore originally outlined in my 2013 debut novel, Spellbound by Sibella, available at Club Lighthouse Publishing and Amazon. The theme was further developed in my 2014 novella, A Rebel Romance, available on Amazon.

Spellbound by Sibella: A Stage Play.
Sibella Cottle, a young beauty of uncertain provenance, falls in love with the philandering Sir Harry Lynch-Blosse. She demands that Harry honour his promise to marry her after becoming pregnant. But Harry's mentor, James Cuffe MP offers him a safe seat in the Irish Parliament provided he marries Lady Harriett Browne. When Harry wavers, Sibella enlists the help of her midwife and witch, Judy Holian. Judy promises to spellbind Harry to Sibella for life using a powerful love charm made from the skin of an exhumed corpse. After his election, Harry proposes to Sibella but withdraws the offer when Cuffe exposes her dalliance with witchcraft. She refuses to leave Balla House even though Harry offers her a mistress-ship in Dublin. When Sibella reapplies the love charm, Harry collapses in a coma. Lady Harriett abandons him fearing a permanent disability. When Harry recovers, he begs forgiveness from Sibella. Swearing that he wants to stay with her for the rest of his natural life, he then promises to marry her. Sibella lies on his chest and cries. Harry wraps his arm around her. But will Harry honour his promise, she wonders?
