MONTSERRAT MENDEZ

  (1980 - )

Nationality:    Puerto Rican
email:    n/a     Website:    Click here

Literary Agent:    n/a

Born in Rincon, Puerto Rico, Montserrat Mendez came to live in Newark, NJ in his early teens. After having had a rough time of it, learning the language and controlling his accent, he discovered theatre his freshman year in college and never looked back. He received a degree in English Literature with minors in Performance and Spanish Literature from the University of Scranton. While in New York pursuing an acting career (he auditioned for every Latin American criminal type ever written) he began to write scenes for his friends to act in, then one-acts and then left acting completely to pursue playwrighting. His first full-length play, Thoroughly Stupid Things, premiered at Manhattan Theatre Source in 2008 and later was called a comic masterwork by Backstage and won the Excellence in Playwriting Award at the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival. He followed that play with Billy Carver and the Children in mind. His third full-length play is an all-male modern adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, titled, Marq as Unread. His screenplays include: Trial (2004 top 30, Nicholl Fellowship), The Bitter Woods - A vengeance fantasia and The Barren Waters. When not writing plays, Mozz is an avid theatregoer, writes reviews for nytheatre.com and pursues screenwriting. With his television-writing partner, Armistead Johnson, he has formed the partnership MozzleStead, and has put five television pilots in the market in 2011 as well as completed an episode of The Big Bang Theory. Montserrat is a partner in the company AMZ CREATIVE, and with Lanie Zipoy is proud to be developing commercial plans for several theatre projects that he discovered in off-off Broadway. He has promised himself to write one full length a year for ten years. So watch his library of plays slowly grow over the next decade.
