The Mikron seed was sewn in 1963 when Mike Lucas, a jobbing actor, realised that his mission was to take theatre to unusual venues and new audiences outside of London. Today we still hold fast his original principles, touring the country with shows which both inform and entertain. It was during a boating holiday that the truly unique aspect of Mikron came to be. Mike, having spent many hours enjoying the atmospheres of the canalside pubs and sampling their local brews, realised that travelling by canal would really give his company a way to reach audiences and venues that may be too "out of the way" for regular touring companies. So in 1972 Mikron took the plunge and toured our first play written for the waterways; "Still Waters". One or two of us have taken the plunge since - usually unintentionally! Mikron is now famous for its national waterways tour, aboard the 1936 Grand Union Carrying Company narrowboat, Tyseley. First used by Mikron in 1975, she has been our floating home ever since. Tour booking and press was done by Sarah from the back cabin of the boat and, with a large bag of ten pence pieces, a stool and a local payphone, she would book and promote tours. Cast members used to research and co-write the shows, which were directed by Mike Lucas. Mike also performed for the company for many years. Mike ran the company until 2005 when his role was split between Richard Povall (Artistic Director) and Peter Toon (General Manager). In Winter 2009 Marianne McNamara took on the Artistic Director role, with Richard stepping out of the day to day running of the company.

All Steamed Up
Synopsis:
The story of Richard Tevithick, the Cornish engineer, inventor and pioneer of steam whose engine was running a good 28 years before the Rocket. This remarkable giant of a man worked at the very edge of technology and his life makes for an exciting adventure story - not least the 11 years he spent in the mountains of Peru. This is history translated into vivid, entertaining and accessible drama.

Beyond the Veil
Synopsis:
DCI Mark Starkey thinks he's got a quiet patch in sleepy Thistledale, but all that is about to change dramatically when there's a sudden, unnatural death on the local allotment... The grisly discovery down by the beehives is only the beginning for Detective Starkey. To unmask the murderer he must first uncover an altogether less savoury side of life in Thistledale; the bitter grudges, thwarted passions and murky pasts. And then there are the bees. The life of the honeybee might be described as one of great sweetness and harmony, punctuated by sudden, desperate, acts of violence. The same could be said for Thistledale. Detective Starkey soon realises that the more he knows about bees, the closer he gets to the killer!

What is he hiding? and who was Ned Ludd anyway? In the bicentennial year of the Luddite risings, which took place around Marsden West Yorkshire, who better to illuminate their story than fellow Marsdeners, Mikron - with their unique blend of humour, history and harmonic arrangements!

Hell and High Water
Synopsis:
Three men had a vision. Hundreds toiled to make it a reality. In 1761 there were two earthquakes in London, a transit of Venus was observed in 120 locations around the world and, on 17th July, the first boatload of coals was borne smoothly along the Barton Aqueduct over the River Irwell on the Bridgewater Canal - the engineering marvel that was the wonder of its age. Manchester s demand for coal was insatiable and there was an urgent need to get it there quickly and cheaply. Over rivers, under rock, through "Hell and High Water", three men proved that determination can literally move mountains.

Losing the Plot
Synopsis:
the gardeners of Thistledale Allotments are a rag-bag bunch of diggers and dreamers. Strong personalities frequently clash over the best treatment for mealy bugs, and the annual 'Heaviest and Longest' competition is always a time when old feuds and new flirtations threaten to undermine the fragile peace. then Harvey from the Council pays them a visit and they realise that they must pull together, or forfeit their precious plot forever. But can they agree on a strategy? How will they convince Harvey of the vital role allotments have played in the life of the nation for centuries? What will they do when things inevitably get completely out of hand? Told with a rollicking mix of old music hall tunes and brand new songs, Losing the Plot is a story of love - between people and the land; between people and people; and between people and their giant vegetables.

Our Victor
Synopsis:
Victor Grayson appears in the history of the Yorkshire Labour movement like a flash of lightning - at once dazzling and fleeting. In 1907, at 25 years old with striking good looks and a gift for inspirational oratory, he caused a national political sensation when elected MP for the West Riding constituency of the Colne Valley. Our Victor is the story of this beautiful young idealist, whose fall from grace and the mystery of his uncertain beginnings and even stranger disappearance make the story by turns a tragedy and a thriller.

Raising Agents
Synopsis:
Bunnington WI is a bit down-at-heel. Dwindling membership means they can barely afford the hall, let alone a decent speaker. So when a PR guru becomes a member, the women are glad of new blood. At first. The milk of WI kindness begins to sour when she rebrands them the Bunnington Bunnies. They're hopping. With stakes higher than a five-tiered cake stand, a battle ensues for the very soul of Bunnington, perhaps the WI itself!

Village Voices
Synopsis:
Elly and Jen have come to Doxey to take over the local Post Office. How will the locals react to a couple of outsiders and their new ideas? Is Doxey a village any more, or simply a suburb of Stafford? And is the village Post Office to become another victim of rationalisation? Based on the stories of real people, Village Voices explores the nature of community and how people cope with change in a fast-moving world.

Warehouse Hill
Synopsis:
Written to celebrate the re-opening of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in May 2001, after decades of dereliction. The show charts the 200 year history of the canal with original songs and music, linking the vision of the 18th century entrepreneurs, who believed they could carve a 3.25 tunnel through the Pennine hills, to that of the canal enthusiasts in the 1970's, who believed in the 'impossible restoration'.

Wheel Of Fortune
Synopsis:
This is the dramatic story of the waterways that link Edinburgh and Glasgow - from their heyday as corridors for commerce and pleasure, through their decline, and to the vision of recent years to restore the link between the two great Scottish cities, culminating in the building of the Falkirk Wheel, a marvel of technology that can lift boats from one canal to another in just a few minutes.
