Doreen first became interested in Theatre when she was invited to join a local amateur company, in Southampton, called Swingtime Varieties, by a schoolteacher who heard her sing to the other pupils during the school dinner hour. She was 10 at the time and several of her friends already belonged to the group. they rehearsed in the local school/Community Hall on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On Tuesdays they learned Tap and Acrobatic Dancing!! And on Wednesdays they learned Ballet. (It cost six old pence each night!) the Company did a Variety Show during the summer and a Panto every Winter. When she was given the part of Red Riding Hood in the next seasons panto she was over the moon! You see, Doreen was always very small, and because of this, although she was an excEllent singer and dancer, she was often too short for the chorus line in the Shows. Many is the tear that was shed as she was told, "Sorry Half-pint, maybe next year"! But she was just the right height for Red Riding Hood and she sang and danced her way through it like a pro. Doreen had found the love of her life: Acting! From then on she had a major juvenile role in every panto, and was given solo spots in the Variety Shows so that her lack of height didn't matter! When she was about 13 she played the part of a blind rag-a-muffin living on the slums with her older brother and sister; a highly Dramatic part which had the audience in tears! She was seen by a London producer who said she was to "go to Drama school and I will see her again when she is 18." Her mother said, "Ooh, isn't that nice!" and that was the end of that! Children from working class families went out to work, not to Drama classes! Doreen stayed with this company for many, many, many years, and between getting married, having two children, training to be a hospital nurse and a District Nurse, learned her stage craft. By now, having grown not in stature, but in skill, Doreen had leading roles in all productions. She became a committee member of the Company, now called Westfield Productions, then Chairman. and saw it grow from a little amateur group to a large successful professional standard company. In 1990 she directed her first panto for the company. It was a great success, so once again she had found a new outlet for her talents, and continued to Direct for 10 years. the pantos went from strength to strength and were now being staged at a professional Community Theatre, winning awards from NODA. In 1995 Doreen decided to write a panto herself, not especially for the Company, but to see if she could do it. From that decision came "Snow White" based on the original panto story, but brought up to date by using Eco-friendly Garden Gnomes who helped to maintain the forest and the wildlife. She thought it seemed OK on paper but how to find out if it would "work"? Westfield Productions came to the rescue, they had a read-through of the script which was videoed to see the Company's reaction. Everyone voted it a winner, so Doreen asked Jim Sperinck of Jasper Publishing if he would consider publishing it. He accepted it with a few professional changes and asked for more! Doreen enjoys contacting companies who stage her scripts and loves to get feedback from them after the production. She still lives in Southampton with her husband David, two children, four grandchildren and so far two great grandchildren!! One grand daughter, Hayley has just started her first Show-Biz job as an entertainer at a Holiday Park in Cornwall.

Snow White

Synopsis:
This pantomime follows closely the traditional story of the wicked Queen, the Magic Mirror on the wall, a bewitched huntsman ordered to kill Snow White, friendly animals, a poisoned apple, a cottage in the woods full of gnomes, and finally a kiss from a passing Prince to round everything off nicely. Add also Dame Murgatroyd, her son Wot, and Lester the Jester, for all the ingredients you need for your next successful pantomime production.
