Avaes Mohammad was born in Blackburn, Northern England. It was whilst completing his Chemistry Doctorate at Manchester University that he found his voice as a poet, playwright and performer. Inspired by or even in spite of the Asian riots of 2001 and the events of 11th September, Avaes committed his work to being an instrument of social reform and shared experience. Artist-Alchemist, Avaes developed his own voice with influences stretching from the Sufi-Saints of South Asia to the Dub-Poets of Jamaica and has since performed his poetry on stages across the UK, Denmark, India, Pakistan and South Africa. Appearing extensively on Radio, his poem Bhopal was commissioned by BBC Radio 4, going on to win an Amnesty International Media Award. In 2003, Avaes expanded into playwriting and has since been commissioned by BBC Radio and several theatre companies across the country with his plays Bhopal (2003), In God We Trust (2005), The Student(2007), Shadow Companion (2008), Crystal Kisses (2010/2011), Fields of Grey (2012) and Of Another World(2014), consistently achieving high reviews. He is currently writing two full-length plays to open in Park Theatre, London, Spring 2015. Avaes has also conducted workshops worldwide with organisations that include The Royal Court (London), English PEN, British Council and the Alternative Living Theatre (India). In 2012 he co-founded The Lahore Agitprop Theatre Company in Pakistan. Committed to the evolving landscape of British Arts, Avaes has directed the British South Asian Theatre Memories Project in partnership with the Foundation of Indian Performing Arts (FIPA) and SOAS, archiving the collective journeys of British South Asian Theatre through the narratives of it's practitioners. Avaes Mohammad is currently Associate Artist with Tamasha Theatre Company and Red Ladder Theatre Company, Fellow of the Muslim Institute, Committee Member with English PEN and Trustee of the Bhopal Medical Appeal.

Hurling Rubble at the Sun
Synopsis:
The story of friendships prized apart upon the very crux of a crossroad. Previously secure within the insularity of their small northern British Asian community, all that Chief and his mates have known crumbles into rubble along with the twin towers on September 11th. In attempting to rebuild a new landscape the only voices available come from a battered tape of Tupac and the discourse of Islamism ringing from mouths of newly-founded street prophets. As new ways of being manifest over the next decade, love and friendship cling like weeds over the face of a new radicalism.

Shadow Companion
Synopsis:
A fearless examination of prejudice and friendship between rival communities in 21st Century Britain. The piece is a dense and engaging theatrical exploration of the friendship between Ruby, an English girl, and her friend Asra who lives in the part of town where refugees are housed, on the edge of her community. The two girls have forged a strong friendship through school which is threatened when angry residents organise a demonstration in the refugee's area, calling for their deportation back to their countries of origin. Ruby's father is the leader of the demonstration and is faced down by Asra's father, a well-educated man who finds himself in the position of representing the views of those in his areas. The play follows the journeys of these characters in the throes of this conflict, looks at how the friendship between Ruby and Asra is tested and explores the attitudes of both communities towards each other.

Shroud, The
Synopsis:
The Shroud is a two-man, miniature epic about loss, time and the things that connect us. A father writes letters to his homesick son. A Kolkata potter shapes clay goddesses from the silt of the Ganges. A young man circles the funeral pyre. Drawing on Hindu myth, memories and personal letters, The Shroud is composed as a series of interweaving dialogues between the poets and theatre-makers Siddhartha Bose and Avaes Mohammad. The ancient and the modern combine to create an inventive, quietly beautiful meditation on death, ritual, fathers and sons.
