Ambivalent Monument, An
Synopsis:
In the outside world social disturbances are intensifying in severity and as the political situation worsens the hero begins to take into account how the small part that he has played may have added in some way to the larger conflicts around him. In the end he finds himself wondering how to conceive of an argument, moral and political, upon which he can pin his hopes or forget about them.

Ascent, The
Synopsis:
A man is employed to write the "story" of a womans life, that is to be her biography. The story as it develops creates a version of what its subject dreams to be the story of her life, for how she wants to live it. Then the biographer, who is a possible suitor is to help fulfill the womans dreams through the telling of her story. He is given some information by the subject, but not enough. So it is up to him to create what is going to happen in the hope that he might be able to come up with what his employer wants to hear. The working out of the tale, creating a future, is a long seduction for which the biographer has to figure out what the conditions are that he has to fulfill in order to meet with the subjects favour and win her affection. The imagined future between the two as it unfolds becomes romantically and sentimentally impossible and then unattainable. The created love lapses into romantic extremism. Running parallel to the illusions of the younger couple are two older people who are defining reasonable parameters that they can agree to live by so as to help each other and get by. Their love does not overextend itself. They take what they can get, and they get it. The action of the play occurs within a context of environmental threat. And as the characters are occupied with their small concerns they are aware of a large unpleasant fate that will finish them off. The "comfort of romantic and practical love" that they are looking for, is an escape from the larger threat.

Living Insignificance
Synopsis:
A person of significant financial means looks to find happiness by losing his fortune. SAM: There are those who are so poor that all they have is money. Then we have heard it said that a man who dies rich, dies in disgrace. We'd be amazed at how many have said that and didn't mean it in the least. So I understand why there are those who don't accept gifts and others who don't appreciate compliments, I don't, and I never accept them as being well-intentioned. I have no reason to. Then I can give an example of what it was like to be thanked when you are not interested, when you don't want to be, you want to be an anonymous contributor, to make a contribution anonymously and have no more said about it. I'll give an example. I once gave money to a group that hadn't solicited contributions and those individuals, the representatives of that organization, sent a letter to me afterwards that I recall to confirm what I know and believe. I'll tell you what it said. It's short, to the point. Dear Sir, we have received your contribution that we are returning, and take note we do not accept unsolicited donations and if you are inclined to send donations, do so after considering that it is not in your interest nor in ours to engage in an exchange of obligations. So what I want to know now, is who is to blame for wanting to help? Whose fault is it? Who is to blame for not being able to?
