Beauty and the Beast
Synopsis:
It's great value: a generously proportioned, boisterous romp with a glittering repertoire of power ballads, dry ice and fireworks, brimming with good cheer. Fixing on the folk tale's familiar Gallic roots (Villeneuve's La Belle Et La Bete), Nick Mowat's production riffs relentlessly on a French cuisine theme. The smarmy baddie Danon (This Morning presenter Andrew Hayden-Smith) is greeted by a chorus of "Mmm Danon" and Alex Wadham's fabulous dame Madamoiselle Renee Tasse de The rocks a sumptuous menu of food-themed costume changes. The audience is enjoined to yell "bonjour" and "oui, oui" whenever good eggs DC and D'jon M'Stard appear. It's typically topical: Olly Pike from CBBC channels Melvyn Hayes as cheeky chappy DC, whose obsession with Star Wars awakens a welter of force(d) references and the plot also meanders enjoyably down the Bake Off route. The silliness and bad jokes are interspersed with eye-popping song and dance diversions, most spectacularly when Tom Senior as the Beast blasts out a muscular Meatloaf number accompanied by fire jugglers and an all-male dance troupe to reveal the romantic spirit that drives this big-hearted show. - The Stage
