(the Pilot Version Of) Something To Die For

Synopsis:
At the outset, the lights go up and - the author - is found on the stage. He begins to speak. A brilliant and defiantly idiosyncratic work, Ross Mueller's latest offering traces the fated meeting of an Australian writer with British heavyweight playwright David Hare during a residency at Royal Court theatre in London. the Australian writer addresses the central question in Hare's notorious meditation on the Middle East crisis, Via Dolorosa - 'what would you die for? Fiercely intelligent and propelled by a dizzying linguistic force, this staggering new work from the 2006 Wal Cherry Award Winner is muscular, lyrical, funny as all get out and ultimately moving. Smart, original theatre at its best.

Beautiful Gesture, A

Synopsis:
St Paul's Church sits beside "Ground Zero". A tiny building on Broadway, it is one of the oldest constructions on Manhattan. George Washington worshipped here. Despite being "just across the street" from the World Trade Centre, on September 11th it was not touched. the church and her graveyard were protected by a tree, which was torn from the ground by this disaster. After the smoke, the church was spontaneously employed as an outpost by the rescuers. Firemen, policemen and construction workers slept in the pews and were treated to massages and foot rubs by volunteers. Today these pews are scratched from the industrial gear that the firemen wore. Even Washington's pew has noticeable wounds. the church has retained these scars as a permanent memorial. Today St Paul's is a gallery of memory. It overflows with Teddy Bears that were sent by children from across the world, cots wait in reminder of where some men slept. Homemade cards are on display. the roots of the tree have been bronzed and remain in the courtyard. there is a hand-stitched banner draped across the nave proudly declaring; "Oklahoma loves you!" Division badges from every unit that served have been collected into a hotchpotch quilt of honour. the time has not been forgotten. Across the street, the WTC site is still a muddy hole. After years of tendering, lobbying and consultation, construction of the Freedom Tower is finally underway but memorials already exist. A Beautiful Gesture takes place in London in the wake of a terrorist attack. This play is about rebuilding. It considers memory, chaos and love.

Concussion

Concussion
Somewhere in a busy city, a Man wakes to discover he has forgotten his life. He has no memory of the past and no clear sense of the present. He is concussed. Or so he is told by a doctor - - who may also be his partner. Now there are flashes of something. Hunger, mourning, sexual appetite. . . Bob Dylan? But why isn't he in hospital? And what of the voices, the Blackberry, the brothers? the hammer? A comedy with attitude, Concussion explodes a simple conceit and scatters its achingly funny and filthy tales of the city like shrapnel.

Melburnalia

Synopsis:
. . . [F]eaturing the CBD, Kew, St Kilda, Ringwood and Footscray. Melburnalia weaves together five specially commissioned new plays by outstanding local writers Kate Holden, Lally Katz, Ross Mueller, Tee O'Neill and Alice Pung. these short works form a single theatrical journey which transits from suburb to suburb and uncovers a city with many faces. Each play illuminates the extraordinary within the ordinary: paraphernalia and miscellanea yield up their stories. From the grungy backalleys of St Kilda to the boulevards of Kew; first love in Footscray and betrayal in Ringwood; from the wide lanes of the Maroondah Highway to the narrow arcades of Degraves St; from heroin to homosexuality; library to laneway; sex work to stage work; bohemians to bogans to boat people to an Apocalypse Bear. Melburnalia is a thought- provoking exploration of the diverse localities, peoples and meanings that come together to form 'Melbourne'.' No Man's Land

Synopsis:
there is a riot going on outside. Two men are locked in a cell together. their crimes are unknown and their sentences are uncertain. the play explores the complex relationships established when two very damaged souls come to care very deeply for each other. Within the darkness of this play exists a healing force of love and honour. It is a deeply emotional play that acknowledges the roles and postures that men adopt to survive, but plunges past all that to the core of confusion, need, and loneliness that boils beneath the surface.

Strategic Plan, A

Strategic Plan, A
Failure is not on the whiteboard. Feel like you're drowning in paper work? Beaten by the impenetrable weight of office bureaucracy? Adrift in a sea of jargon? You're not alone. Andrew, former rock muso and new CEO of youth music organisation, Staccato, was parachuted in to save the company from oblivion. Mission accomplished, he's setting his sights on implementing a bold, new strategic plan. But the Board has unanimously scrapped the plan and neglected to tell Andrew, leaving him adrift in a world of KPIs, performance reviews and a General Manager who refuses to return from his holiday in Thailand. A Strategic Plan is Geelong-based playwright Ross Mueller's contemporary satire about office life, arts funding and the perils of following your heart. Hilarious, pointed and painfully observant, it's sure to cut close to the bone for anyone who's ever tried to make a difference at work.

Town Named War Boy, A

Town Named War Boy, A
Inspired by The State Library of New South Wales' jaw-dropping collection of World War I diaries and letters, A Town Named War Boy explores both the events of war and the impact it has upon soldiers and their families. Written with insight, humour and sensitivity, Ross Mueller's moving play brings the ANZAC legend to life.
