Yves Henri Michel Navarre was born in Condom in Gascony, France on 24th September 1940. The family later moved to Paris. Yves was bullied at school because he was gay and his father contemplated having him lobotomised as a cure - other members of the family stopped him from going through with this. At university - The Universite de Lille he obtained degrees in English, Spanish and Modern Literature. His first novel was published in 1971. He received the Prix Goncourt for the novel " Le Jardin d'Acclimation" in 1980. In 1984 he suffered a stroke. He was said to be President Francois Mitterrand's favourite author. He committed suicide on January 24th 1994. He once wrote: "I am a writer. I am gay. I am not a gay writer."
