Anima Mundi
Synopsis:
A young American poet arrives in London at the turn of the century, falls in love with a troubled dancer and has his fortune told by Madame Blavatsky. Each tarot card triggers a vivid scene from his turbulent future. Yeats in the tower, the Satanist Alister Crowley, and cranky Ezra Pound in the mad house are there as well as Oscar Wilde among some French ladies of easy virtue, a shell shocked Everett in no man's land, the bitter ballplayer Rex, and the manic Captain Blood. At a wild seance, Wilde's ghost is summoned to discuss God and chocolate eclairs. This poetic play traces the young American's search for his elusive love, God and the meaning of art in a stunning tapestry of memories and nightmares

Synopsis:
In this longer one act, Blossom Appledorn is struck by lightning as a child, and from then on can hear voices speaking to her, one of which is a Crow who urges her to get up in the middle of the night to see the future in a rain barrel. There she learns that her son, who was killed in the Civil War, was actually murdered by his friend T. H. Grim so Grim could have her son's wife. Thus begins a decades long struggle between the eccentric woman, whom everybody thinks is cracked in the head, and the sociopath Grim, who is aware that she is somehow on to him. Ardy Fafirsin
Synopsis:
Based on lurid accounts of one of the most sensational murders in English history, this wild and dark mock Elizabethan farce tells the twisted and strangely compelling story of Alice Ard. This young wife was repeatedly thwarted in her attempts to murder her devoted and unsuspecting older husband with the help of her reluctant lover, her bumbling servants, a lecherous grocer, and two gluttonous murderers Black Will and Shakebag. these two find themselves lost in fog, locked out of gates, drenched by chamber pots and tormented by flatulent mice. the language is richly beautiful, complex and often wildly funny. there is an eccentric, melancholy poetry hidden in the play which captures the contradictory wonder of Elizabethan Drama as if through a series of nightmarish fun house mirrors. This play will make you laugh, will haunt you and make you swear off blue porridge forever

Armitage
Synopsis:
Zachary Pendragon rages among the tombstones of the family burial plot. Filled with hatred and waiting for him to die, his stepdaughter Margaret watches from their Gothic mansion in the east Ohio woods. So begins the dark and labyrinthine tale of a family with a complex and terrible history. Through Margaret's journal, Zach's memories, the batty poetry of Margaret's mother, and the memories of Zach's tormented son John, a Gothic tale woven back and forth in time and space emerges. It is a tale of desperate love and suspicious deaths, of desire, murder, madness, grief and terror. Having the richness and beauty of a complex Gothic novel or a Jacobean nightmare, this remarkable saga of happenings in the Pendragon mansion builds to a stunning conclusion that is guaranteed to surprise. Perhaps the most haunting of the author's cycle of Pendragon plays, this mystery is both funny and grotesque, moving and hypnotic

Balloon Rat
Anna, a young German woman, tells us about the mysterious events that took place in her old apartment in Munich, where she lives with her little girl and a cat, when a large but demonically clever rat seems to be moving around at night among the blown up balloons left on the floor after her daughter's birthday party. In Anna's increasingly desperate efforts to discover if this rat is real or imaginary, she comes to believe that the appearance of this rat seems to be connected in some mysterious way to her own upcoming 30th birthday. A funny and touching monologue about a compelling young woman coming to terms with time and mortality

A table and some chairs. In New York, in the summer of 1964, Buster Keaton appeared in a short experimental film written by Samuel Beckett. In this play, set in an Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village that summer, two gentlemen named Sam and Buster attempt to communicate with each other, with the unlikely help of a chattery young waitress with theatrical ambitions, who mistakes Buster for Moe from the Three Stooges and Sam for his agent. A funny and moving play about the quiet, absurd heroism of two apparently very different but very great artists

Mama has taken Annabel and Harry to the park to read them edifying passages from the Bible. the Old Testament story of lust, incest and murder she stumbles on is not what Mama had in mind, but it holds them all spellbound. This play will infuriate people like Papa, but its madness and witty irreverence reveals the unexpected beauty buried in a complex book that hypocrites who would control what we read are too blind to see. This unusual play would make an excellent pairing with God's Spies

Boar's Head
Synopsis:
This big, colorful, uproariously funny and ultimately moving play tells the story of the Shakespearean characters who meet at the Boar's Head Tavern in East Cheap. We see the scenes Shakespeare tells us about but leaves out of HENRY IV, PARTS ONE AND TWO, HENRY V, and the MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, , centering on Doll Tearsheet, her unrequited love for Ned Poins, Ned's sister Nell, impregnated by Prince Hal, and Robin, a girl masquerading as a tavern boy, also in love with Ned. Bardolph, Mistress Quickley, Justice Shallow, Pistol, Jane Nightwork and a host of other characters who live at the edge of Shakespeare move to the center in this play, along with Jack Falstaff and a dead Windmill Keeper who might be Shakespeare himself. the language is rich, the characterizations compelling, and the play has a surprisingly powerful resonance of its own.

A bench. the mad Shakespearean scholar Delia Bacon has devoted her life to proving that his plays were actually written by her namesake, Francis Bacon. Ignored by all, she talks her way into Shakespeare's tomb and intends to spend the night digging up evidence to support her contention. Boneyard
Synopsis:
In this funny play about time, aging, and the eerie eternal life of art, Ben has turned forty and is going out with women young enough to be his daughter. He has odd flashbacks to television idols from his childhood: aging Cisco and Pancho trying desperately to mount fat old horses, toothless old sidekicks like Gabby and Jingles, and of the dying, heroic Beckett like Buster Keaton playing all the parts in Romeo and Juliet in a dark theatre before a probably imaginary audience

the old producer, a skeletal, dying gentleman from the old days on Broadway, tries to convince a young playwright not to give up his big chance because he won't let anyone tamper with his script. Chronicles
Synopsis:
In 1920 the Pendragons gather for the first time in years at the crumbling family mansion in Ohio where Matt Armitage lies dying. As his daughter Dorothy, who can neither hear nor speak, provides a running commentary which is heard only by the audience, her wild sister Jessie chases their half brother John Rose from room to room and tries to fathom what betrayal is behind her father's refUSAl to speak to her mother. Uncle David, an eccentric poet, is back from scouring Europe for a lost girl. John Rhys Pendragon, the journalist, broods over his wife's death and the loss of his beloved daughter. Sister Lizzy bustles around trying to feed everybody while enduring her own grief as Sarah, the housekeeper, is being driven mad by the confusion. Trapped in the labyrinth of a darkly cruel history, these people nevertheless love each other and make each other laugh. Richly textured and intricately woven through time and space, this funny and moving addition to the author's Pendragon series features characters familiar to fans of Tristan, Pendragon, Anima Mundi, Laestrygonians, the Circus Animals' Desertion, Dramatis Personae and November

Cincinnati
Synopsis:
This complex and terrifying play is about a woman who has embraced the illusion of central position she believes she is the center of the universe, that when she moves from one location it is disassembled by evil demons and reassembled elsewhere, and that the universe exists simply to torment her, distract her from the true nature of things, and give her as much pain as possible. Powerful, funny, disturbing and disorienting, this play stretches one actress to the limit of her abilities and takes theatre to the edge of madness

Cinderella Waltz
Synopsis:
Rosey Snow is trapped in a fairy tale world that is by turns funny and a little frightening, with her stepsisters Goneril and Regan, her demented stepmother, her lecherous father, a bewildered Prince, a fairy godmother who sings salty old sailor songs, a troll and a possibly homicidal village idiot. This play investigates the archetypal origins of the world's most popular fairy tale, contrasting the familiar and charming Perrault version with the darker, more ancient and disturbing tale recorded by the brothers Grimm. Grotesque farce and romantic fantasy blend in a fairy tale for adults

Dark Sonnets Of the Lady, The
Synopsis:
This funny Drama takes place in Vienna, 1900. A beautiful and brilliant young girl enters the office of Sigmund Freud to begin the most famous and controversial encounter in psychoanalysis. Dora is funny, suspicious, sarcastic and elusive. Freud becomes obsessed by her and he moves like a detective through the mystery of her mind, finding a lecherous father, an obsessed mother, an irritating brother, a sinister admirer with a seductive wife, and a lost little governess. Nightmares, fantasies, hallucinations and memories materialize on stage in a kaleidoscopic tapestry as Freud moves closer and closer to the truth about Dora's murky past. Is Dora sick or is the corrupt patriarchal society in which she and Freud are trapped the source of a complex group neurosis that binds the characters together in a web of desperate erotic relationships? the play becomes a war between Dora and Freud over the nature of truth and the uneasy truce between men and women. This tragic love story is laced with haunting Strauss waltzes

Daughters of Edward D Boit, The
Synopsis:
Four young sisters are trapped for a century in a famous painting by John Singer Sargent, arguing over which if any of them actually slept with the Italian steward on the ocean liner that took them to Italy, and over the relative pleasures and dangers of physical experience, fantasy, self denial and art. Florence believes in experience, Jane in mystery, Mary Louisa in art, and baby Julia has had to go to the bathroom since 1882. This loving tribute to a very great painting is an imaginary journey into the world of the four girls imprisoned in it, and also deals with serious questions such as whether cockroaches are edible and why nobody would sleep with Henry James.

Descent of Man, The
In this very funny monologue, a middle aged teacher, forced by his school board to teach Creationism in his science class, tries to swallow his contempt for what he considers idiotic superstition masquerading as science because he needs to pay alimony. His increasingly bitter, revealing and wildly inappropriate lecture to his class becomes a dark investigation of what science is, of the relationship of science to belief, the existence of God, man's place in the world, and how closely related the school board is to monkeys. This darkly sardonic monologue is a great showcase for an actor in his prime.

Evenings Near Kiev
A writer in his sixties is obsessed with Gogol's burning of his last great novel before his death. He imagines the dark fantasies, images from the horrific tale Viy, passing through Gogol's mind, recalls other instances of writers and other artists destroying their work or having their work destroyed by others, and tries to come to terms with the possible futility of his own life's work. A dark and complex investigation into the nature of creation and its relationship to destruction.

Girlhood Of Shakespeare's Heroines, The
Synopsis:
Done separately or together, these monologues offer a funny and compelling investigations into how to survive as a minor character. In Dead Men's Fingers Ophelia talks about what was really going on at Elsinor and about her impossible position as the smartest person in a world of passion driven characters. Axis Sally finds an unhappily married woman playing Ophelia in a workshop. Her identification with the character's frustration is intensified by her friendship with an old woman playing Lady Macbeth and with a caged animal, Martin Fisher Martin. In How Many Children Had Lady Macbeth? an actress tells of her obsessive quest to play Lady Mac, of the disastrous productions she's starred in, and how being an actress has made her desperate to play her favorite role for the children she will never have. Notes from the Moated Grange finds a minor character from an obscure Shakespearean play awaiting her beloved. She speculates on the nature of obsessive love and the difficulties of playing one's assigned role. Full Fathom Five proves that Prospero's captivating daughter is much livelier than we have been led to believe. "Funny. . . . Plays delightful games with language. . . . A great showcase for young talent." Cleveland Plain Dealer. "This is theatre of ideas that assume flesh and blood because the characters are so strong, so indelible and filled with sly humor."

Gorgons

Ruth and Mildred are aging movie stars in the 1960s. they have in their time (the thirties and forties) been goddesses of the screen, but now both are on the skids and desperate for work. Mildred is doing obscure theatre under spartan conditions when Ruth comes to her with a film script she wants them to star in. It's a horror movie called Gorgons, about two insane and homicidal sisters. Ruth needs another big name like Mildred to get the funding. they have always been bitter rivals who've fought over roles and men. Ruth has slept her way to the top, while Mildred has taken the high road and paid for it, and they loathe each other. But both long to be famous again, so they agree to do the movie, which involves a human head bouncing down a staircase, wheel chair torture, and the dismemberment of an unfortunate servant. they fight, scream, throw fits, throw heads, seriously injure one another, and at some point come to the conclusion that they must stop the war and work together if this disastrous movie is not going to end up being their inglorious and humiliating epitaph in Hollywood. then come the Oscars. Look out. Imagine Joan Crawford and Bette Davis doing their best to refrain from murdering each other while holding severed heads and axes. This ice pick sharp, insane asylum funny, dark as a tomb riotous all out struggle between two legendary titans of the screen is a joyous playground for two mature actresses who can play every note on the emotional keyboard, from heartbreak to homicide, and really go all out. No holds barred, non-stop, wicked, sympathetic, murderous, and wildly funny

Great Slave Lake
Synopsis:
This long (about 35 minutes, perhaps) one-act is an unusual mystery. Two women, Gretchen and Margaret, sit on their next door front porches in a small Ohio town in the autumn of 1938 and talk about their husbands, both named Clyde, each a brother of the other woman, who have mysteriously disappeared on a fishing trip to Canada a few months earlier. As we listen to their funny, sad conversation, we see upstage the two Clydes in a row boat on Great Slave Lake, and as the play progresses, moving from one conversation to the other, we are invited to gradually put together the mystery of what happened to the men. Meanwhile, Margaret and Gretchen are visited by a pretty 19 year-old blind girl named Betty who may have been impregnated by one of the Clydes. Mysterious, complex, frightening, and funny

In a frigid Christmas landscape in a Civil War year, a young Union soldier goes after a horse thief, is shot in a mysterious chapel in the Maryland woods, and wakes to an eerie delirium involving an innocent young girl, her seductive and dangerous mother, a cackling, half mad crone and a bloody hunter sharpening an ax. An American retelling of an ironic medieval masterpiece, this haunted Gothic play of desire, past betrayal and murder is an intriguing addition to the Pendragon series

Grotesque Lovesongs
Synopsis:
Written by the author of the Curate Shakespeare As You Like It, Seascape with Sharks and Dancer and other plays, this quirky comedy about a family in Indiana enchanted audiences at New York's WPA theatre. Pete and John live with their mother and father, a horticulturist. A pretty young woman named Romy is engaged to Johnny, who has just inherited a ton of money from a family friend, Mr. Agajanian. Pete pesters his mother about why Johnny received the entire inheritance until she admits that Mr. Agajanian was Johnny's father. Stunned, Johnny retreats to the greenhouse and finds Pete and Romy making love. Everyone but Johnny is haunted by a traumatic past experience: the mother by her affair with Agajanian; the Father by the memory of his first true love, a Terre Haute whore; Pete by his failed marriage to a circus con artist, and Romy by her two failed marriages. All of the characters but Johnny also know what they want: Louise and Dan want the contentment of their marriage; Romy wants to bake bread in a big old house and she wants Pete, who finally admits that he wants her, too. Finally, Johnny realizes that what he wants is to go to Nashville to be a singer of sad love songs. Note: this play is a treasure trove of scene and monologue material.

Hieronymus Bosch
Synopsis:
the great painter Hieronymus Bosch and his wife Aleyt confront their younger selves and a filthy bagpiper in this terminally weird play that brings to life the texture and madness of Bosch's exceedingly bizarre paintings. Loony, grotesque, erotic and sad, wildly bitter farce and out of tune love story, this is Bosch in a Beckett world by way of Finnegans Wake. This play will probably not be a favorite of your old Aunt Bessie, unless she likes to spend time naked in the bread box

Laestrygonians
Synopsis:
Silent film starlet Mary Margaret is alone in her Hollywood bungalow, about to kill herself. A former Shakespearean stage actor, now a drunken silent movie leading man with a bad reputation, calls on her and tries to convince her to face life. In the course of their hilarious conflict, images of the actor's past emerge. His efforts to help Mary Margaret live force him to deal with his own demons and find a way to cope with the terrible secret that eats away at him like the cannibal Laestrygonians in Homer's Odyssey. Funny and rich in character and language, this powerful and unusual love story, part of the Pendragon series of plays see page73, is rich with great audition monologues and scenes. Don Nigro's followers will recognize some of the characters from Chronicles, Anima Mundi, Beast with Two Backs, Autumn Leaves and Dramatis Personae.

Lamp Post
Near a college campus in the late 1970s Ben, a graduate student, is awakened in the middle of the night by a stranger pounding on his door, a confused and troubled young woman who mistakenly believes that his apartment is the Crisis Center. He makes the mistake of letting her in, and then, against his will, is forced to listen to her increasingly frenzied story about how she can make street lamps go out and kill peacocks with her mind. She thinks somebody's following her, and that that J. Edgar Hoover is putting chemicals in the water and listening in on her conversations. In the course of their funny and increasingly alarming encounter, Ben discovers that he might be the Crisis Center after all. A good showcase for two young actors.

Listening
Synopsis:
Yvette, an old woman, describes her experience during the German occupation of France in World War II, when she was persuaded by the Resistance to remain hidden in the secret passages of an old chateau which the Nazis had taken over as a command post, listen to their conversations from behind the walls, and smuggle the information out at night through a secret tunnel. In the course of this very dangerous work she becomes so obsessed with listening itself, and with observing from secret places, that it begins slowly to take over her life. Strange and powerful, an excellent piece for a mature actress.

Love Labours Wonne
Synopsis:
Dark and strange, ribald, funny, sad and beautiful, this unique play takes audiences on an inspiring trip deep into William Shakespeare's soul. Late on the stormy night on which he is to retire to the country, Shakespeare staggers drunkenly onto the stage of the Globe theatre. Longing for quiet, green Stratford yet grieving for the London theatre world that has been his life, he is tortured by memories and hallucinations of his early struggles in the vicious city quagmire. His daughters arise as Miranda and Ariel and join the notorious hack Robert Greene who comes from the dead to accuse him of Marlowe's murder. Queen Elizabeth makes a cameo appearance and people from his life mix with characters from his plays to create a wild hallucinatory investigation into the nightmare of art

Lucia Mad
Synopsis:
This lyrical, intensely funny and haunting play about the madness of James Joyce's beloved daughter Lucia traces the imagined course of her doomed love for the young Samuel Beckett and investigates the relationship of creation to love and madness. Joyce is living in Paris and deeply absorbed in the composition of his last great work in progress eventually to become his enigmatic masterpiece Finnegan's Wake . He adores his beautiful and gifted daughter Lucia, but is unable to give her the attention she craves. Her down to earth, no nonsense mother, Nora, also loves her, but must spend much of her time looking after her absent minded genius husband. When Joyce's young disciple Beckett appears, Lucia falls madly in love with him and Beckett is torn between his reverence for Joyce, his compassion for Lucia, and his terror of her bottomless need for love. Lucia has a sharp eye and a wicked sense of humor, and she retains both as she slips deeper and deeper into madness despite the best efforts of Joyce, Nora, Beckett, Jung and Napoleon. This is a wildly funny play with complex and vivid characters, rich language and an eerie, eccentric and melancholy beauty

Marina
In this longer monologue, the great Russian poet, Marina Tsvetayeva, attempts to make sense of her complex and tragic life, which is woven deeply into the tragic history of Russia in the first half of the twentieth century. An immensely gifted writer, she has lived in exile, and then come home to Stalin's Russia in a terrible time of war. Emotionally complex, she has been much in love, betrayed her husband, and crafted amazing poetry from her sufferings. Brilliant, original and contrary, she finds it impossible to write the sort of propaganda the Soviets demand of her. She has failed her children, lost her husband, and discovers that she has perhaps misunderstood everything in her life. Her courageous attempts to understand herself and her country are inspiring, funny, and tragic.

Mata Hari
On what could be the last night of her life, Mata Hari, exotic dancer, sex goddess, and accused spy, is visited in her prison cell by her long abandoned husband. She hopes he is there to save her, but instead he attacks her, accusing her of various sorts of betrayal. In her attempts to defend herself from his accusations, and from the accusation of treason for which she has been condemned to death, we begin to see the complex series of choices that have brought her to this desperate place. She is beautiful, funny, seductive, a bit wicked, and totally captivating. And her husband, for all his anger at her, is still very much under her spell. What he asks of her is to dance for him, her famous Dance of the Seven Veils.

Mink Ties
Synopsis:
A paunchy, middle aged man in a rumpled suit wears mink ties, a sure fire conversation starter, until he encounters a strange girl, a raccoon and a 1914 Republic truck that give him first hand experiences with traps, horned and screaming fat women, and the urge to gnaw one's leg off. This is a fine showcase for a character actor

Monkey Soup
Synopsis:
Set on the stage of a New York theatre in the 1930s, this demented, madcap, no holds barred, galloping farce is a loving parody and homage to the sort of movie the Marx Brothers might have made after a hundred cups of coffee with their hair on fire. the language is rapid fire and the physical comedy is maniacal. Mrs. Lillian Quackenfurter, a once renowned actress, has written the worst play in the history of the theatre, Lady Furtwinger's Lover, which she hopes to star in to revive her career after a forty year hiatus, and has hired a person she believes to be the internationally renowned director, Dr Cornelius T. Fartwhistle, a rude, fast-talking con man who insults her constantly and makes hash of her play. He's actually a dentist named Hassenfusser who accidentally killed Fartwhistle with laughing gas while filling a cavity. the stage manager, Boccalucci, and his wild, girl-chasing, mute assistant, Goosey, who have worked with the real Fartwhistle in the past (and slept with his wife) blackmail Fartwhistle-Hassenfusser into letting them appear in the play, planning to disable the other actors by feeding them bad fish and putting vodka in the water cooler. Lucy the maid is determined to get through her exposition, despite the fact that she's forced to talk into a goose instead of a telephone, and is being constantly bombarded by bird carcasses. Edgar is insanely jealous over his blond bombshell wife thelma, who is unconscious for much of the second act. Dick, the leading man, plays tennis and announces that he has three balls. Somebody has put tranquilizer darts in the prop gun. Non-stop lunacy.

Mooncalf
Synopsis:
Rebecca, a woman in her seventies, is writing a letter to her son, Ben, although she speaks the letter to the audience. She tells him the increasingly grotesque and horrible story of the very cold night in which her cow gave birth to a calf, but because her husband Clarence says he won't go out in the cold for a cow, the calf freezes to death, and they are forced to engage in increasingly unhappy efforts to get the weak cow back into the barn. But the cow keeps staggering back out to be with the frozen calf, until Clarence, in a rage, goes out to shoot it. But the silver lining, says Rebecca, is that now we got all the hamburger we can eat. A complex, funny and horrifying little tale that might explain why Ben never writes back

My Sweetheart's the Man In the Moon
Synopsis:
In the first years of the twentieth century, Evelyn Nesbit, the beautiful, teen-age pin up and chorus girl, was the entrancing center of an explosive and deadly love triangle involving Stanford White, her married lover and the architect of many of the most famous buildings in New York, who liked to push her naked on a red velvet swing, and Harry K. Thaw, the wealthy, manic and demented roller-skating Pittsburgh playboy who married her, beat her with a horse whip, and eventually shot White through the eye socket during a musical performance at the rooftop theatre at White's Madison Square Garden. This wickedly funny play chronicles the grotesque events leading up to and after this notorious murder and Evelyn's wild, strange journey through her American tabloid nightmare as she is hounded by carnivorous reporters, threatened, used, betrayed, bribed, stalked and nearly destroyed by the rich, the corrupt, the violent and the insane.

Narragansett
Synopsis:
In the year 1874, Ada looks over the rail of a boat in Narragansett Bay and tries to make sense of her life, obsessively returning in her mind to her experiences twenty years earlier, when she was governess for the children of Nathaniel Hawthorne on a trip to Italy. Memories of her love for their beautiful but doomed daughter Una, their demonic son Julian, and of a monstrous hairy creature like a huge badger that keeps crawling in her window at night, mix with eerie recollections of the ruins of Rome as she attempts to prepare herself for the cold water beneath her. A haunting monologue about the sadness of time, the mixed joy and horror of desire and memory, and the relationship of love to death. A powerful piece for a skilled actress.

Nothingness
Synopsis:
Ben, a man of 62, living in isolation, becomes fascinated by a story about the Scottish philosopher David Hume, sitting alone in his study one night, becoming terrified that if he opened the door, nothing would be there. Hume works up the courage to open the door, finds his friends playing billiards, and this reassures him that there is such a thing as objective reality, and cause and effect does exist. This leads Ben to thoughts of a rather different experience, of his father using a pool table to quietly give his son a lesson about reality. But what is really on the other side of the door? A quietly powerful play for a mature actor. Ben also appears in Andromeda Chained Naked To Her Rock, Seascape With Sharks And Dancer, Things That Go Bump In The Night, November, Mutability Cantos, Boneyard, The Dark, and Witch Hollow.

November
Synopsis:
In the autumn of 1980, Aunt Liz is trapped in a nursing home in the hilly agricultural country of east Ohio while her niece Becky and Becky's revolting husband try to steal and destroy her farm. Her life is further complicated by a harried but sympathetic young nurse, her nomadic nephew, a bewildered friend, and her sisters cranky Molly and Dorothy, a deaf mute piano player. Memories of her beautiful and long dead Jessie also intrude, as well as her outrageous fellow inmate, Mr. Kafka, who tries to teach her about muskrat traps and immortality. November is part of the author's cycle of Pendragon plays; fans will recognize some of the characters from other plays in the series

Paganini
Synopsis:
This wildly funny, demonic epic farce traces the bizarre career of virtuoso violinist Nicolo Paganini, a man so possessed during his performances that it was rumored he had sold his soul to the devil. Using Paganini's 24 CAprices for Violin as a haunting background, this nightmare play gallops through grotesque adventures as Paganini plays to spellbound audiences throughout Europe, the century's equivalent to a rock star. He leaves a trail of seduced women, enraged fathers and creditors and reportedly evades responsibility for a murder. A clockworks girl, a horrifying jack in the box, a trumpet blowing gorilla, a cymbals hanging bear, a barbershop quartet of murderous doctors, dead bird soup, Beethoven's ghost, an earsplitting diva, the king of France and other delights and horrors are encountered as Paganini moves toward his terrible destination. This inventive play employs theatrical conventions to tell the surreal story of a dark and twisted journey while probing the consequences of art and the nature of salvation for the artist

Palestrina
Synopsis:
Becky Reedy sits on the porch step of the Palestrina house in Armitage, Ohio, in the autumn of 1946, having just been sick from too much wine and lasagna. She is not making a very good first impression on her boyfriend's Italian mother, a tough woman who supported her family through the Depression by making bathtub gin. Two very different women, one who has devoted her life to her children and one who is lonely, defiant and doesn't like her children much especially after her first husband hung himself in the barn struggle to communicate in this addition to the Pendragon plays

Pentecost
On a dark, rainy night, Egg Rooks, who lives at the dump, has tracked down Jack Pentecost, the handsome traveling revivalist preacher, who moves from town to town seducing and abandoning young women. Jack has made the mistake of seducing the love of Egg's life, a young waitress named Dorry, and Egg has come to confront him with the consequences of his actions. Pentecost himself is a dark, cynical, guilt-ridden soul, who uses his religious authority to take advantage of the innocent, and he is just about at the end of his rope when Egg shows up. Time and space curve back on themselves and we see Dorry, her seduction, and the terrible aftermath. A dark continuation of Nigro's long series of plays about the Gothic, mythological Pendragon County, Ohio.

Portal
Synopsis:
In this unsettling monologue for an older man, the great landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, at the end of his life, has been confined to a remote island off the coast of Maine, presumably insane. But Olmsted believes his exile is a conspiracy designed to prevent him from informing the world that the gates of Central Park are in reality portals to another world, a labyrinth that exists in another dimension underneath the park. Nearly all the men involved with the creation of the park have met with mysterious deaths. Olmsted is desperate to warn the world before it's too late.
