Edna O'Brien was born in County Clare, educated by the Sisters of Mercy in Galway and graduated as a pharmacist before going on to write her first controversial novel, the COUNTRY GIRLS, in 1960. Since then she has written over twenty five books, including WILD DECEMBERS, IN the FOREST and BYRON IN LOVE. Her plays include A PAGAN PLACE (Royal Court, London), VIRGINIA, a play on the life and writings of Virginia Woolf (Haymarket, London), IPHIGENIA (Crucible, Sheffield), OUR FAtheR (Almeida, London), FAMILY BUTCHERS (Magic Theatre, San Francisco), TRIPTYCH (Southwark Playhouse, London), HAUNTED (Royal Exchange, Manchester) and most recently her own adaptation of the COUNTRY GIRLS (Gaiety Theatre, Dublin). She has won a number of awards including the European Prize for Literature, the Ulysses Medal from University College Dublin, and the American National Arts Gold Medal, as well as awards from the Writers' Guild of Great Britain and the Los Angeles Times. In 2011 she won the Frank O'Connor Short Story Award for her story collection, SAINTS AND SINNERS.

Haunted
When a bewitching young woman who runs a vintage clothes stall turns up at Mr Berry's London home to collect some clothing, he is entranced. He takes the chance to enjoy her company by accepting free elocution lessons from her in return for presents of expensive clothes and jewellery which belonged to his late wife. the only problem is, Mrs Berry is not actually dead.
