Jake Oldershaw doesn't give performances so much as issue personal invitations to individual audience members. This is work so intimate that it feels like a secret, but a particularly pleasing one. He has collaborated with companies like Stan's Cafe that share his interest in the relationships between artists and their audience and in the potential power of the small but perfectly formed Arts experience.

For their Own Good
Synopsis:
Can the way we kill animals tell us anything about how we deal with our own demise? In a former veterinary demonstration room, two knackermen investigate the pitfalls of being high up the evolutionary chain. Combining puppetry, new writing and documentary material this show tells a moving and darkly comic tale about the only certainty in life: death and how it's become removed from us as a process. Unflinching honesty, genuinely humbling and unique' (Strawberry Line Times). Bitesize commission supported by WAC, mac, Bristol Ferment, China Place and Arts Council England. Part of British Council Showcase.

Intimate History
Synopsis:
Inspired by theodore Zeldin's book, Intimate History is a singular experience in every way. Experienced one at a time, each person chooses from a menu of stories and is then treated to a recreation of that story, woven around them using found objects and tiny models and accompanied by an extremely fine pianist. You could be hearing the sorry tale of Tom and his wayward entrails, or eating Turkish delight while watching a minute camel cross the desert. But, whichever story you choose, these are five-minute epics of astonishing sweetness and emotional depth. Resembling a series of beautifully animated cartoons that are somehow happening around you, Intimate History works perfectly in the context of a festival where the word of each audience member's private experience can spread and accumulate.

Story of the Four Minute Mile, The
Synopsis:
Everybody said it couldn't be done. . .6 May 1954. the wind drops and Roger Bannister starts to run. As the crowd hold their breath, the crackled voice of the announcer breaks the silence: 'Result of event 9, the one mile. . . time: 3 minutes. . .' the rest is unheard in the roar of excited cheers and flashing bulbs. He'd done it. On the anniversary of the first sub-four minute mile, Oxford Playhouse presents the fascinating true account of how one dedicated amateur runner achieved what the world thought was impossible. Taking place on the Iffley Road running track, where the four minute mile record was first made, this new Playhouse Plays Out production invites audiences to walk a mile in Bannister's footsteps, exploring one of the city's greatest stories. A tale of courage and ambition; an experiment in mind over matter. From the excitement of the build-up to the magical moment itself, you will be transported back to 1954 in an interactive experience featuring memories and anecdotes from Oxford residents who were there on the day. At the very place where history was made, you will become part of the cheering crowd, hear from the pacemaker and discover what it feels like to cross the finishing line, as you walk a mile in the famous footsteps of Roger Bannister.
