i put the fear of mexico in em
Two couples confront each other in a back-alley bar in Tijuana. the Mexican couple, Efron and Juana, taunt, challenge and ridicule an American couple, Jonah and Andrea. Juana carries an assault rifle slung over one shoulder for equal rights. But there's a sense that Efron, himself a human machine gun, is more assertive than Jonah. In the verbal crossfire that ensues, word play from the Mexicans connotes the distancing created by cultural and language differences. the Spanish word guera, meaning blond, for example, can be interpreted as a white woman who is not welcome. Also the Spanish word guerra, a close sound-alike, means war. the two couples are at war with each other. When certain barriers are crossed, whether it's physical boundaries between countries, or in personal or sexual relationships, the situation grows dangerous. At the close of the excerpt, the American woman goes off with the Mexican man.

Myth America

Conceived and curated by Stephen Wargo. Features new writings by Arthur Kopit, Theresa Rebeck, Israel Horovitz, Rachel Axler, Ian Cohen, Brian Dykstra, Jason Grote, Matthew Paul Olmos, Julien Schwab, Saviana Stanescu, and Lloyd Suh. : Myth America invites audiences to take a tour through the eyes and voices of Americans from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds as they live out their American dreams and myths both accomplished and crushed with expectations exceeded and unfulfilled. From the Old West to Ike's 1950s and continuing through the 21st century, this ensemble-driven piece examines the vast range of America's Melting Pot and our conflicting views and values. Icons, idols, and symbols are examined and explored-running the gamut from baseball (the Great American Pastime), to Marilyn Monroe to the modern family unit and even the acquisition of the perfect vacuum.

so go the ghosts of mexico, part one
Synopsis:
In 2012, Sam Shepard was awarded the Ellen Stewart Award to honor his work as a playwright who has consistently challenged conventional theatrical boundaries. As part of the award, Mr. Shepard chose Matthew Paul Olmos to create a new work to be produced at La MaMa. Olmos' play, so go the ghosts of mexico, is inspired by the true story of Marisol Valles Garcia, the bravest woman in Mexico, the play follows a young woman who volunteers to replace a beheaded police chief and sets off a chain reaction in her husband, the Narcos, and perhaps the entire country of Mexico. This is the first in his three-play cycle dealing with the U.S./Mexico drug wars.
