Una Aya Osato was born and raised in the East Village, New York City. She works as a performer, writer, and educator, continually merging her art and politics. She began her performance career at age seven, dancing with the world renowned José Limon Dance Company, touring in the U.S. and Europe. As a youth, she was a repertory member of CityKids, where she appeared on network television. While completing her studies at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and Music & Art, she was awarded the level one prize in theater by the U.S. Arts Recognition Talent Search and was named a finalist for the Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Following this, she was invited to participate in the Sundance Theater Laboratory where she performed in Julia Cho's 99 Histories. Since graduating Wesleyan University, she has written critically acclaimed one-woman shows: Recess, JapJAP, and Keep It Movin', which she has performed nationally and internationally at various theaters, classrooms, community organizations and college campuses. Among the critical acclaim Una has received, The Montreal Gazzette called her a tour-de-force and she was given five (out of five) stars by Toronto's Eyeweekly. Recess and JapJAP have won numerous awards including winner of "Best Female Solo Show" at the San Francisco Fringe Festival, "Best of Fest" in Winnipeg Canada, "Volunteer Pick" award at the FRIGID New York Festival, and was nominated by the NY Innovative Theater Awards for Outstanding Solo Performance. Her newest project is called LOL: The End, a show about how a family of clowns understands natural and human made disasters, written and performed with her sister and father, directed by Moises Belizario. In addition to touring her own work, Una also performed in Taylor Macs Obie Award winning show, The Lilys Revenge, at the HERE Arts Center. For the past 10 years Una has also been teaching performing arts framed in a social justice context in elementary, middle, and high schools across the U.S.
