Synopsis:
Amici is a unique dance theatre company integrating able-bodied and disabled artists and performers. Founded in 1980, Amici have had a major impact challenging conventional attitudes about disability and the arts. A thought-provoking and beautiful new full company production, which fuses music, dance and text. Set in contemporary Britain it tells six heart-rending, personal stories of mothers who have lost their children in tragic circumstances. As tales of drug abuse, honour killing, homelessness, illegal immigration, gangland violence and prostitution emerge at the inquest into their children's deaths, they ask, could they have been prevented?

Golem, The

Golem, The
Why do giants, monsters and robots excite children? This ancient myth shows how a giant, The Golem, is created by magic to save the village people from harm. The Golem becomes a local hero. But, with time, what happens when The Golem decides to take control? Fusing puppetry, absurdism and physical theatre with original music and a modern text, this fantastic story will thrill and intrigue young audiences.

Notes:
The Golem, inspired by the Yiddish legend of the man made out of dust, was the germ of Mary Shelley s novel Frankenstein.

Holocaust Trilogy

Holocaust Trilogy
Presented as a trilogy at the New End Theatre in 1995 before touring much of Europe, The Dybbuk pays homage to Anski's great Russian classic. Set in a ghetto in Eastern Europe in 1942, it traces the final moments of five irreligious Jews. A Dead Woman on Holiday is a love story set during the Nuremberg trials. Theresa is based on secret research into the Channel Island occupation by the Nazis and the collaboration of the residents with the Holocaust. The play is still banned there.

Nineveh

Nineveh
'Once there was a boy. the war had taken his hands and arms. When he went home, his family didn't recognise him. "You have no arms", they said, "you are not our son". they threw him into the river, where a giant fish swallowed him. . . ' Three men sit in purgatory, playing and living in their dreams, with nothing but their memories to haunt them. When a boy arrives their world begins to change, launching them on a journey beyond the atrocities of the past. Critically acclaimed physical theatre company theatre Temoin present this visually stunning exploration of the trauma of combat and the hope that comes afterwards. Inspired by true stories told by child soldiers and ex-combatants from across the world; collected by the company during a year of creative work in Kashmir, Israel, Lebanon, and Rwanda.

Shylock Play, The

Shylock Play, The
When Warsaw Ghetto-escapee Sarah visits the Venice Ghetto she happens to witness a group of actors staging a dress rehearsal of The Merchant of Venice, upon this chance encounter Sarah is confronted by the terrible story of 'the Jew' which touches her own life.

Notes:
Through this emotive and provocative play Julia Pascal re-works Shakespeare's controversial text, transposing the fervent theme of anti-Semitism raised by the bard, playing it out in a contemporary setting. Challenging the portrayal of 'the Jew' that for many years has dominated society's attitudes towards the Jewish people, Pascal ambitiously places her own text within Shakespeare's classic, producing a thoroughly thought-provoking and original work.

Woman in the Moon

Woman in the Moon
Fritz Lang's silent movie Frau Im Mond influenced a generation of space scientists particularly Wernher Von Braun. Von Braun was the brains behind the 1969 US moon landing. He was also the Nazi scientist who engineered the construction of the V1 and V2 rockets which bombed London in 1944. Pascal's new work explores the connections between Hitler's death weapons and the US space mission asking difficult questions about science and morality. A modern Faust play, this text is inspired by testimony from French, German and Austrian former slave workers from the V2 factory Camp Dora.

Year Zero (L'Anee Zero)

Year Zero (L'Anee Zero)
Year Zero is a bitter-sweet satire inspired by interviews conducted in the north of France, where Communists, Gaulists, collaborators and those who were children during the 1940s, provided the original source of material. The play exposes the day to day experiences of the men and women who suffered or profited from those zero years.

Yiddish Queen Lear, The

Yiddish Queen Lear, The
New York in the late 1930's. A once-famous Yiddish actress gives her theatre business over to her three daughters. A story of love, infidelity, betrayal and exile inspired by Shakespeare's King Lear, this new play with music, examines the moment when Jewish East European and American cultures mix on the eve of the holocaust.
