Catherine Street
Synopsis:
After the untimely death of her husband, Marcelle Bloomer is forced to take a job as a swing shift ticket seller at a downtown bus station. On an unseasonably warm June evening, she misses the last bus on her usual route home and finds herself stranded in the deserted darkness of downtown New Orleans. Marcelle walks a few blocks to a stop on Catherine St., because 'the I-19 makes a few more stops, but I'll make it there just the same'. At such a late hour, on such a dark street, Marcelle is relieved to find a clean and decent-looking woman waiting for the same bus. Her relief quickly turns to vexation as the strange woman makes odd comments, at increasing volume, about the contents of a bag she just found. Marcelle's vexation turns into outraged curiosity 'because even crazy people don't joke like that'. Going against everything she believes about manners and personal decorum, Marcelle snatches the bag away from the woman and screams at her because 'she had to shut up'. the strange woman staggers off into the night, leaving Marcelle with a bag that she is now too afraid to keep, and too afraid to throw away. Marcelle looks inside. Catherine St. spans ten years in the lives of its' characters. During this time, Marcelle Bloomer makes extreme personal sacrifices in her efforts to right a world that she considers 'upside-down'. To Marcelle's dismay, her decisions are constantly challenged and criticized by her only daughter, Jade. Since her father's death, Jade has assumed the role of caretaker of her mother, whom she considers fragile and uninformed. *Catherine St.* is the story of Marcelle Bloomer, her daughter Jade, Jade's husband, Leo, and the turns their lives take after Marcelle's discovery on that unseasonably warm evening in June.
