Creche Scenes

Synopsis:
a holiday season alternative to "A Christmas Carol." A darkly humorous play in two acts, it is composed of six thematically related one-acts that take a sometimes poignant, humorous and macabre look at how America's ultimate holiday doesn't always meet our expectations for family togetherness, religious fulfillment and universal brotherhood. Creche Scenes explores a second honeymoon run aground on a reef of grief ("Bruce: A Porthole View"), a family dispute played out over a pet ("Dog"), the theft of a religious statue ("Pete's Christmas Story"), sibling rivalry run amok in the Rust Belt ("Monica the Church Lady"), and disappointment and Disney World ("Dan"). Interspersed throughout is the story of a kind-hearted soup kitchen volunteer, who has a unique way of easing pain and suffering ("Julie").

Maura and Katinka

Synopsis:
Maura and Katinka relates the stories of two young immigrant women to the United States: one driven from Ireland by famine, the other from Hungary by revolution. the play reveals their common experiences even though they lived nearly sixty years apart. Maura leaves a land ravished by famine and the cruel indifference of the English rulers, who are determined to stamp out the native culture. Katinka is first caught up in the exhilaration of the revolution, as the students lead the revolt against their Soviet masters, and then flees as the tanks of the Warsaw Pact enter the city, the young soldiers believing they are in Egypt not Budapest and that the Danube is the Suez Canal. Rebuilding their lives proves difficult for both women, overcoming problems in language and prejudice, while trying to adapt to an alien society. the time of the play ranges from 1898 to 1960. the s et is an abstract evocation of the main waiting room at Ellis Island.

New York Play, The

Synopsis:
an adaptation of four plays from the Wakefield Mystery Cycle, Creation, Cain and Abel, Abraham and Isaac and the Second Shepherd's Play. In Scene One, three doormen bemoan the lost glories of their post-apocalyptic Manhattan, where they have been reduced to walking rich people's dogs. they decide to take naps, and fall asleep. In Scene Two, God creates the world, which is New York. In Scene Three, God is confronted with the rebellion of two of her favorite angels, Lucifer and Lightborne. She casts them down into Hell, where they are reduced to being Devil 1 and Devil 2. In Scene Four, God gets lonely, and creates Adam and Eve, for companionship. Eve is visited by Devil 1, who tempts her with the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge and she succumbs. Eve succeeds in tempting Adam. God sends Cherubim to lead them to Earth, where they will work lousy jobs for the rest of their lives. In Scene Five, Cain is a former investment banker who was fingered by the SEC. As part of her parole, she runs a failing community garden on the Lower East Side, where she employs the Boy. Abel is her younger brother, who's everything that Cain is not: generous, devout, kind to animals, etc. Abel comes to Cain's garden to take her off to make the monthly sacrifice. Cain goes with him, unwillingly. Abel joyously gives up her puppy , but Cain can't bring herself to sacrifice her dandelions. the Angel comes down from Heaven to tell Cain to shape up, and Cain smacks the Angel. Cain confronts Abel about God's constant favoritism towards him, snaps and kills Abel. While Cain would be happy for someone to kill her, God promises her a long, unhappy life. Back at the garden, Cain tries to persuade the Boy to help her hide Abel's body and go on the lam with her, but he refuses. Cain heads as far east as she can go, to Montauk, to try to start another, better garden. In Scene Six,, Abraham, a knife-thrower, runs a down-at-the-heels circus. God appears, telling him to sacrifice Isaac at the site of the worst circus disaster in New York City, ten blocks away. Abraham tells Isaac that he must accompany him to get his knives sharpened. they walk to the place, and are followed by Babette (a French roller skating hula hoop dancer) and Consuelo (a magician). Babette tells the future by the use of her wind-up monkey. the Angel stops Abraham from sacrificing Isaac; the n Isaac asks him if something very bad is about to happen. the Angel won't answer, and they ask the wind-up monkey. the monkey falls down dead. In Scene Seven, the doormen wake up. A rogue doorman, Mak, steals their favorite dog and the three are forced to go on a quest to reclaim him. the doormen are visited by the Angel who tells them that a baby girl born to save the world is in a burned out building in Bedford-Stuyvesant, and they brave the ice-covered East River to find her. the style is the Marx Brothers meet a Christmas pageant gone very, very bad.
