Marita Phelps began writing at age thirteen when her first one-act drama, Don't Ever Call Me Black was staged in Seattle's FringeACT Festival of New Original Work in 2004. She went on to attend Howard University for playwriting where she earned a BFA. Her one-act, Smoke & Mirrors was featured in the DC Black Theatre Festival in 2010 and in the Howard Player's 24-Hour Playwriting Festival. She was a visiting student of Columbia University in her junior year where she began developing her first full-length play, Baggage of Beauty, later read at Howard University and again in the DC Black Theatre Festival in 2012. She now resides in Seattle where she continues to write.

Synopsis:
Baggage of Beauty follows the story of Crimson, a teenage girl battling body image issues that crop up as she gets her prom dress ready for the big night. Her family friend and seamstress, Ms. Wise, struggles to keep her boutique open in newly gentrified South Seattle.

Decolonized

Decolonized is an experimental 10 minute play inspired by Auguto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed. The character Thespis desires greatly to break the "fourth wall" while conservative Protagonist, is willing to fight to death, to keep the fourth wall intact.

Don't Ever Call Me Black
Synopsis:
Candace, a young African-American girl, struggles to find self-worth living in a predominately Caucasian city as well as being raped. Her inner conflict manifests as a desire to be white. Don't Ever Call me Black is a play about internalized oppression. This play speaks to the complexities of systematic oppression and sheds light on the inner world of what it means to be dually marginalized in US society as both a girl and African-American.

Smoke & Mirrors is a sequel play to Don't Ever Call Me Black that further explores the psychology of Candace, an African American girl who wishes she were white. Teenage Candace struggles to overcome the social consequences of "Acting White" among her African- American peers at school.
