Ulrich Plenzdorf was born on October 26th 1934 in Berlin, the son of a machine builder. His parents had been members of the KPD - the German Communist Party during the War. They were repeatedly arrested for this after the War and so in 1959 moved to East Berlin. He studied philosophy at university but switched courses and obtained a degree in film making. He is mainly known as a film scriptwriter. He died on August 23rd 2007 after a long illness.
