Edward John Morton Drax Plunkett was born on July 24th 1878. He became the eighteenth Baron Dunsany in 1899. He attended Eton and Sandhurst and joined the Coldstream Guards. He fought in the Boer War. In 1905 he published his first book of fantasy ("Gods of the Pegana") under the name Lord Dunsany. He wrote many novels and short stories of this type. His first play to be performed was "the Glittering Gate" for the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1909. "the Gods of the Mountain" was his first play to be staged in London in 1911. At the outbreak of the First World War he enlisted in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was on leave in Dublin during the Easter Rising and was wounded. After the War he resumed his writing and had numerous successes with his plays and fiction. He died on 25th October 1957.
