Don't Call Us, We'll Call You
Synopsis:
The first selective service draft lottery took place on December 1, 1969. On that date we find William Andrews fresh out of business school, jobless, and frustrated. His future will be determined by his draft status. The matriarch of the family, Eleanor, does all she can to provide support and guidance to William. His younger sister, Sandi, has difficulty handling her own issues. They all depend on the father John's meager income for survival. That income stream gets disrupted by a general lay-off. Father and son do what they have to do to keep the family from going under. The family faces a number of internal conflicts as they struggle between right and wrong and continually try to justify their means to an end. William gets caught up in stealing merchandise with a shady friend. John starts transporting stolen liquor with an old acquaintance. Things fall apart as they find it difficult to justify their wrong doings. John's arrest, Sandi's recklessness, and Eleanor's constant worrying begin to work on William's conscience. They feel they are victims of circumstances over which they have little control. They seem to be puppets who respond when someone else pulls their strings. They do not quite understand that the choices they make give them greater control over the outcomes that follow. Ultimately, good triumphs over evil, and the family manages to get back on track toward normalcy. This brings them closer together as they face their uncertain future.
